Might as well wait for AM5 if your gonna burn this much cash
This can be said for every high end chip. Tech changes quick, go for the gusto if you want it.

And depends on the chip stock when it does come out (currently predicted sometimes in 2022)

how does this make any sense at all?

if you're gonna spend this kind of money...then just wait? for how long? what are we waiting for? what if you need it now? what if you have the disposable income? what if you've already been waiting since the 3000 series? what if you have all your parts? what if you just want to build now? should we just keep waiting? if am5 is gonna cost this much, should you just wait until the next gen? what if you can't get am5 when it comes out, should i get this then?

please tell me, under WHAT SCENARIO does it make sense in your head to get this chip?

i'm assuming that you are not the target audience for it but you fail to even understand that you aren't the audience because you probably only think about yourself? are you conflating your current disposable income issues with everyone else?

every single time there's a thread about any computer part, there is this one guy that says the same thing. "wait." do these people lack self awareness or what?

12900k is rumored to be better, cheaper and launches in 2 months. This is the latest of the rumors pointing to that:

https://videocardz.com/newz/intel...h-r20-test

Personally I would wait, you either end up with a better product via Intel 12th gen on a socket that will last 2-3 generations or you buy the 5950x at a discounted price in 2 months because AMD now has competition, but unfortunately AM4 is basically a dead socket at this point, so its a better upgrade than a full build.

As far as skipping this for AM5. I kinda feel like the market for people who are buying $800 CPUs is comprised of people with enough disposable income to not care, people who will build a high end rig and keep a long time, or people that actually need it soon. Yes, AM5 will be better and provide an upgrade path. That said, as we saw with AM4, that upgrade path may not be wonderful for the first generation of AM5 boards. Also, DDR5 will be steadily getting better during the AM5 run as well as be expensive on launch. Do you wait for better boards and a more mature DDR5 when AM5 launches? It never ends.

You guys are off your rockers if you think platform compatibility even matters remotely. How often are people really upgrading their CPU *and* it's still on the same socket *and* you can use the same motherboard?

How often? What are the stats? I bet you that's less than 5% of people who even build PCs. The generation to generation jumps are so tiny that most people hold onto their CPU for quite a few years and by then - there is a new socket or your motherboard is incompatible or there are other reasons to get a new motherboard (new connection standards, all the RGB, etc. etc.).

Socket upgrades is a moot point and I'd highly recommend no one buy their CPU with the notion that they're gonna be upgrading to a newer version in the same socket with the same board because the chances are very slim.

Really weird aggression in this reply. An unnecessary "wait" reply is better than a thumbs down, and offers more of their thought process than "how is this slick?".

For many, an ideal "slickdeals" scenario to get the highest end of am4 socket b550 and x570 mainboards begin being clearance while remaining on retail shelves. People interested in this CPU will likely be aware of am4 is a long-lived socket and that am5 + zen4 is something they will definitely want, and that selling or retiring their 5950x in some dusty old b450 system would be a waste.

You're conflating disposable income and impulse control.

I am very interested in the ATX12V0 (or whatever it's called) psu standard that Intel is pushing and AM5 may adopt. That's the only reason to wait in my mind. However, I'd much rather be a late adopter to an established and well honed standard than an early adopter to new tech.

Agreed. It's got to a point that with every chip you are better off getting a new MB and maybe even RAM too. So the upgradability is an old practice. With so much incompatibility with power and liquid coolers and RAM speed bottlenecking, keeping old parts with a $1,500 top of the line CPU that just came out, never makes sense.

I have a 1950x and the highest I can upgrade is 2970x but with my MB and Ram it will be bottlenecked and it's not even worth it's used price with latest CPUs so I don't believe in upgrading.

For me upgrading is selling the old PC altogether and buying/building a new one.
