I really don't need this, do I? For 2k or 4K video editing and general productivity and light gaming? I have a 3700x and a 1660 Super, so prolly would need to get RTX to match CPU?

A new Intel 12th Gen benchmark leaked today, it again confirms previous leaks and rumors that the 12900k will beat the 5950x in single core performance (important for gaming and general use) and match the multicore performance, with an alleged price of $600. Launch date is late October.
Even if you arent interested in the 12900k, AMD is guaranteed to drop prices to stay competitive. So I'd personally wait another month to see how things shake up.

Probably warmer than Zen 3, but not too hot. 12th gen is the first Intel desktop CPU on Intel 7, which is comparable with TSMC 7nm (what Zen 3 uses). Prior generations like 11th gen Rocket Lake were on 14nm+++++. Due to how the new architecture is, half the new cores are very efficient, which means lower power at basic tasks, and when fully engaged across all cores.

$600 would definitely be aggressive. I can assume that 690 boards aren't going to be cheap, and you might need DDR5 to beat a 5950x though, so system cost could still be more. It's really nice to see intel actually moving things forward again though!

I think maybe a 3900X or 5800X would be more sensible options
At this point, unless you need a system now, it will make more sense to wait for intel 12th gen. ddr5 support, pcie5, significant performance improvement, power efficient cores. I am definitely waiting before upgrading my 5820k.

While I agree with you that one should wait to see how Alder lake performs, those "leaked" benchmark are probably from Alder Lake with DDR5, that would mean additional cost, and it is probably consuming a lot of power too, so I wouldn't have high hope for Intel.
