This is the best retail price EVER but you should also consider a used CPU from EBay I calculate that many are selling for ~$320 because so many people have to have the latest DDR5 PCs they are dumping their 5950x's.

They need to drop into the $250 range used.. $320 too close to retail

Yeah, I remember two years ago these were routinely going for $1000+. The thing is, I'd question the benefits of spending this kinda money when for about the same price an i7-13700K will give you a similar number of cores (16C/24T) with a boost turbo of 5.4ghz versus the 5950X's 4.65ghz. And the 13700 will give you DDR5 and PCIe 5.0, depending on the Z690 board. From what I've read, AMD still has a lot of kinks to work out with the 7 series Zen 4 architecture.
A good motherboard will have at least 12 VRM transistors to supply ample power for the 170w cpu. I did a great deal of research in Jan 2022 and ended up getting an Asus Tuf x570 Plus Wifi motherboard[amazon.com] ( mine was a blem model from Amazon for $130, they retail for $180-$200 right now). You really are getting a lot more when you pony up the extra $75, you get almost 2x the power transistors AND much higher-quality transistors (usually Japanese) which are more energy-efficient (produce less heat) AND which produce much cleaner power which will prevent glitches (crashes) with the 16-core CPU.
I always planned to upgrade my CPU (AMD 5700g) so I bought a much beefier AM4 motherboard with this high-end CPU in mind. And I agree that if you are building a fresh system you probably would start from scratch with a DDR5 CPU & Motherboard & RAM.
The Desktop PC market right now is struggling. GPU market sales are an 18-year low!!! By the time black friday comes, this situation could reverse. I doubt that prices will be SUBSTANTIALLY lower on black friday - probably about the same, or possibly even higher for some items

You are only looking at the last few months... Change the date range to a larger piece of the space-time continuum. In doing so, it should show a very large downtrend.

This is a very good point. At a glance I see the lowest price for the 13700K seems to be at least $400.00 but the 13700KF is also comparable in both performance and price to both aforementioned processors. The 13700KF is the same price as the 5950X. For the right price, you are still getting one the best processors money can (reasonably) buy, whichever it may be. But what are these kinks you speak of? I have not heard this. I've only heard that the 5950X is one of the best processors you can buy.

interesting. i might just pull the trigger. im on 3700x now, this would be a decent upgrade for me I guess? I don't game much but mostly photoshop, graphic design. I still feel like my cpu is strugging its just kinda old/slow by now.
If your use is 95% gaming then unless the remaining 5% is high-dollar-earning productivity software yes the 7800 is worth $49 more.
Of course it's more than a $49 difference once you figure in the higher motherboard and memory costs of going to the 7xxx series instead of the 5xxx series.
If you are mainly gaming an X3D processor is definitely a good idea. I am a professional software engineer and might be running some large compute jobs or compiling the linux kernel, in which case the 16 processors (32 threads) of the 5950x would come in VERY handy !! Also the 5950x is way more power-efficient than anything from Intel and so you'd be making a blunder buying an Intel processor at the same price.
On the other hand, the 7000-series of CPUs has amped up the power to match Intel so in that generation, 7950x and 13900k probably use almost equal amounts of power.

These cores are going to be about 20% worse performance than the 7000 series. A 12 core 7900x will be cheaper right now and beat it in multicore even. Single core... no contest.
