Much cleaner than even before Google launcher/home page added the ads. I should've done this long ago for my 2017 and 2019 pro.
Use the free Button Remapper to make the home button (single, double, long click) do what you want it to. I have single click go to FLauncher, double to open up the task/app manager screen where u can close apps, and long press goes back to the Google stock page w the ads if necessary for preference toggling.
I also changed my Netflix button to not work on single press (no accidental startups) and now double click or long press starts up Plex instead.. I snagged decals off an r/NvidiaShield sub reddit member (theres a sticky) that sells high quality textured vinyl decals of almost any app, logo, whatnot you can overlay on the remote button.
Anyway, as pissed as that recent move made me at Google.. It actually led to me being happier than ever w my Shield setups.

I gave up immediately and returned and bought the new Pro.
Although it shouldn't be that much of a difference between this tube version with 2gb ram vs 3gb on the new pro, it is definitely a huge difference.
I love the new pro. Dolby vision, Atmos, and AI upscaling work great. AI upscaling of 1080 or even lower res content works phenomenal. Very noticable upscaling, unlike the gimmicky upscaling of the past.
Buy the pro.
The Android TV software that the Shield uses is maintained by Google. And they recently started displaying ads on the homepage that takes up like 1/3 of the screen.
There are different workarounds to get "fix" it but each workaround comes at a cost of reduced functionality in some way.

There are different workarounds to get "fix" it but each workaround comes at a cost of reduced functionality in some way.
The workarounds available stay put through updates and actually improve the launcher look and experience more than the out of the box/oem experience Google was providing... Especially w the addition of those egregious ads.
BTW This home page update that has the ads is for all Android TV devices. All those new chromecasts and TVs using ATV will get the same ads (if the device is still receiving updates that is).
