Remember when Intel 11th gen was supposed to beat AMD? They even had benchmarks pre-release. Intel definitely knows how to stretch their benchmarks by picking bias scenarios to test against. Even if 12gen "beats" AMD, it will never be able to match performance/watt. Not anytime soon.

Alleged power specs suggest it'll be pretty much as hot as the 11900k. So very toasty

I am already planning a separate rig with EPYC Genoa and 128gb ram with triple GPU to run my epic (ha!) solitaire marathons at high framerates. This is just to hold me over.

Thats not how it works.

First, Intel has never had a '11nm' or '12nm' node. Intel 7 is a rename, but of a node that was never used before and will debut for 12th generation. It was previously called 10nm ESF (Enhanced SuperFin), which brings increased performance and efficiency gains over its predecessor, which was used in Tiger Lake (10nm SuperFin). This is a big leap for Intel on desktop as Rocket Lake (11th gen) came on 14++++ Nm.

The whole reason Intel had to do these renames is because people like you get confused, because every foundry uses their own node size names, partially due to marketing, partially due to different sizes and technologies.

So like Samsung 5nm is slightly worse than TSMC 7nm.

But long story short is Intel 7 is named the way it is, because it is comparable to TSMC N7 ('7nm'), which is what AMD is currently using.

It is funny that Intel is using clever, intentionally misleading naming of their node to portray technical parity from a trailing position. The same things competitors were trying 20 years ago when Intel had technical dominance (e.g Cyrix 6x86 "PR233" that clocked in below 200MHz but claimed it was as fast as an Intel P233 in general use.)
