I would agree with you, I compared this(and 820) to Sony,LG,Samsung,Xbox using UHD,BD,DVD and Panasonic performed the best with all 3 formats.
Since there is no set standard on processing HDR(& upscaling) everyone does their own thing and that's what separates players.
Panasonic claims that their "Optimizer"optimizes HDR to your displays best capabilities.
Whatever it does it does it better than the rest.
As you pointed out with non 4K content the difference is even greater, it's upscaling of BD is top notch also.
In some cases it will rival 4K streaming.
I get people get hung up with DV , just understand the transfer plays a big role on quality and you still have the HDR core to process.
There is no display that can take full advantage of DV so it has to be "downscaled" to your displays capabilities, why the processing is important.
BTW I've had the 820 & 420 for around a year with zero issues, unlike the others.
Besides, a PS5 is $500. A One S can be had for $100 and do much more than this player.
Nope. Not identical. Ps5 is better.
As some have mentioned Panasonic is pretty much a must have for PJ. It will hands down out perform the Xbox in every aspect with all disc!
If you are very comfortable manipulating your PQ the 820 is much more intuitive with that and a complete must have and well worth the extra cost over the 420 IMO.
If playing games is a big part than I can see why Xbox might be a better choice.
I would be shocked if a brand new 420 goes down to $100, with all the issues going on with shipping delivery and all.
This got to $130 last year and that was a steal!

Yeah I caved and bought the 820 60 days ago as none of the previous sales from 2019 & 2020 happened this year.
Cry me a river! It's true.

Performance wise they are the same other than DV.
You gain 7.1 output and much more intuitive picture adjustments with the 820.
Unless you place a lot of value on DV that's worth double the price(when 820 is on sale) the 420 is the better value IMO.
However, if you want one with Dolby Vision, you'll need to go with the UB820.
If you want only HDR10/Dolby Vision, you'll want the Sony X700 or X800.
Sadly neither Xbox X or PS5 will output Dolby Vision. Xbox will only do it for streaming content.
Is there a big difference with Dolby Vision?
It depends on what your display is like, and weather or not you are into calibration details.
In my opinion I noticed Dolby handles reds differently than HDR10/10+.
For example Mad Max Fury road, the oranges, reds, and amber colors look more natural in DV as opposed to HDR10/10+. The darker contrast is noticeable when you watch something with full black picture backgrounds like space movies.
