Many of these phones don't have enough memory, for more than a very few apps. With16gb, you are lucky to have half that in actual memory. If you just need one for calls, & little else, they will be fine.
I recently found a deal on a Samsung a51, with 128gb memory. And there is over 20gb of Samsung junk on it, that I can't uninstall.

Very true. Although I did pick one up for my dad. I love technology but my dad could care less. He has used Trac with a flip phone I got years ago for free. He just uses it for calls. In March his phone will be obsolete and he needed a replacement so it is a great gift, especially with a year of service. Really about the only scenario is for an older parent, I would not recommend for a childs first phone because they will put games on and it will just lag.

If you buy that Total Wireless iPhone 12 mini from Walmart @ $299, you can just slap a prepaid annual $39 Tracfone SIM in it, right? I've read that Tracfone SIMs will work despite it being advertised at TW locked

That is correct. Except that you have to check the carrier that the iPhone is compatible with, and then buy the correct Tracfone sim (eg. Verizon and so on)
