Since Ms. Killjoy brought it up I'll give my opinion from personal experience.

Main difference is DV and the extra adjustments with "tone mapping modes" are more for people that like to tweak their PQ, example are PJ owners.
Since PJ's can't do DV the 820 is way overkill.

The 420 processes HDR better than any player in this price range(it's the same as the 820).
Since DV is dynamic HDR you get whatever the transfer of the movie gives you.
Depending on that transfer, the HDR processing on the 420 can rival a movie with DV.

The bigger difference is upscaling to 4K, the 420 does that even better.
It does it so well that depending on the transfer of the movie, BD disc may rival 4k streaming.

This player will give you the best PQ from all three disc formats and no issues that people often bring up with other players.

If you have a home theater speaker set up, physical media is worth it over streaming. If you're using the speakers built into your TV or a soundbar, you won't notice much difference with blu ray vs streaming. The immense difference is in the audio quality.

Finally bit the bullet and bought this as I currently only have a blu-ray player. Would've liked the 820 since my Sony TV can do Dolby vision, but even at the discounted $400 price, I couldn't justify it. Now I've gotta go buy some 4k movies Smilie

PS. I called up Crutchfield and tried to get them to price match this because I have some rewards $ with them I wanted to use. The guy on the phone started doing it, then 10 seconds later goes "Oh, umm apparently that price is less than our cost per unit, so I can't do it for that price because we'd be losing money on it." So I guess that means this really is a good price lol

You may not have to, this player upscales very well, all the disc you have now will get a good upgrade.
In some cases it will rival 4K streaming quality. 👍🏻

"Best all around" yes this will give you best PQ will all three disc formats IMO.
This doesn't support Dolby Vision though which the LG C1 does.

Yes it will, Panasonic claims it's "optimizer" will optimize the PQ to the best capabilities of the display, if it does it shows in its performance.
The mapper/enhancer is just for HDR but yes it's upscaling to 4k is even better than the rest even more so.
The HDR type you will want to set it on my guess would be mid to high luninance, you can try high also see which work best.
I'm tempted by this deal, as I'm stuck in a proverbial chicken/egg scenario.

I have an older LG 60LA6200 1080p TV that I've been very happy with. I also have a Yamaha Aventage 2070 AVR setup for 5.1 sound. This Panasonic would be the first step in eventually moving to 4k, and honestly, the cheapest step to take first.

Any problem with adding this BD player as my first upgrade, and the TV at some later date?

So I ordered an open box, and it already arrived. Must have been a local ship. Can't wait to do my own comparison test tomorrow morning and see if I can actually tell a difference between this player and my sony. Will add my 2¢ here when I do.

This would allow to enjoy newer audio codecs on the Yamaha, so I think it would be a good first step.

Has dual HDMI, so can send audio to the receiver and video to the tv. Pretty sure the TV you have won't pass through audio to the receiver, so this would be a great option.

True but even IF the disc has DV and IF the the transfer is a good one which isn't often the HDR processing from this player often makes that difference minimal.
What you gain is the other two formats(BD & DVD) gets a significant benefit/upgrade. Some BD disc will rival 4K streaming.
So overall it's the best choice IMO.

No you shouldn't, as a matter of fact this player will let you change settings for a 1080p display.
When you finally get a 4K display you just change the settings.

I ordered an open box as well; i have the Sony 700 from target still in the box; even at $129 that was a great deal. I might end up keeping both for multiple tv…. Still id like to see the condition for the open box; great price if its legit…

That's a solid receiver and I'm sure this player would at least upgrade the sound you're getting out of whatever lesser quality player you're using now. From what I've read about this player on here and other sites, it's pretty much the best overall sub $300 one you can get. If you wanna splurge for the 820, that's currently on sale for $400, but if you're not sure if your next tv will even have Dolby vision, I'd just get this one while it's 40% off and call it a day.

Also, I'm not sure they'll be making too many new 4k players in the future since everything seems to be going away from physical media, so who knows if this model will still be in production a year or two from now if your current TV lasts that long.

Any reasons I should consider this if I have a PS5? Serious question as I know nothing about these 4K players.

Better processor, better audio video codec support..

You can compare it like we can play games on our mobile phones but xbox ps5 are the best and meant for gaming..similarly these players are the best in what they do..if you have decent home theater setup..I recommend you to have dedicated 4k player

Never understood that argument, like you said a display just processes what it's "fled".

If true a BD player fled into a 4K display would upscale better than a 4K player playing the same BD disc, which is not the case.

There is no set standard on how to process upscaling to 4K or process HDR, that's what separates players in quality/performance.
You are making the assumption ( or perhaps its your opinion) that these Panasonic players can upscale better than the better/best TV's
As you know I disagree with that
