Great mesh router. Have one myself. I tested this and orbi from costco and this one has a much faster wifi backhaul. Its too bad this thing is so expensive. Didnt even really see any black friday deals for this. Cheapest i could find was $350. I also recommend using firmware 42095. Its the most stable

If you want total customization over your mesh network, this is the brand to get, but for the price you are not getting the best performing mesh units out there. The fastest system that's cheaper is the TP-Link X5700, just putting it out there for anyone looking to take advantage of a full 1Gbps over Wifi, the AX5700 can out put around 1.4Gbps over wifi to a proper client, making it 1/3 to almost 2X faster which are all around 800-900Mbps. That is without wired backhaul which would actually bottle neck unless you are using 2.5Gbps or faster port and switches.

I faced the speed and connectivity issues with Orbi from costco. Has been dealing with tech support for nearly a month with no success.
Frequent disconnects and ultra low speeds. My outdated google wifi works reall well with a stable connection and Orbi failed miserably. My ISP speed is 600/600 when measured at Orbi ports. Orbi only delivers 100mb max. Most frustrating issue is disconnects. 5 out of 10 ping to the gateway 10.0.0.1 get timed out.

Because of those issues i bought this XT8. I observed the speed is slightly better than Orbi as it is about 250 mbps still not even close to ISP speed. The problem with disconnects is there with xt8 too but not frequent as Orbi. Upgraded the firmware from the factory flashed version as suggested by the support. No change.
The disconnects seems to be specifically for 5GHZ-1 band whereas 2 4 and 5GHZ-2 works well most of the time.
Im thinking of returning both Orbi and this xt8 back to the store and wait until i get something stable with a decent speed. Going back to my Old google wifi refurb. Pretty old, but stable.
These junk boxes not worth the money.

Not sure how many of you experienced such issues..but i will not shell out money for the highly unstable firmwares.

Note: AT&T gateway configured for IP passthru fixed mode. All radios , packet filters and firewalls disabled.
Agree. I think all these companies struggle with features vs. stability. I moved over from the TP-Link Deco M9 Plus due to buggy firmware and will say that each firmware revision of these seems to get worse to the point you have to let others beta test. I really draw the line when it is expected that I have to reset all my settings and build them from scratch each time. Sadly, that is pretty much the manufacturer's expectation now.

Got the used from the warehouse for $260, thanks!
I did the same previously and it was actually defective. I hope you didn't receive my unit. There was zero way the node would connect to the router. Asus wanted me to send it back to them and pay for shipping. I said no thank you and sent it back to Amazon.

I'm still thinking about AX82U or AX86U to make the main router and let XT8 like a node. I think that the best way to get full signal coverage 3000sqt house.
I have AX86U too as main router i basement but not as part of the mesh. Both units of XT8 are connected to AX86U through a 2.5Gb switch and run as AP in mesh on the first floor. The AX86U actually has better performance and stronger signal, but it is dual band only and more expensive.

Bought these pair mainly to control kids' internet addiction, without paying monthly fees Smilie

1. connection drops sometimes.
2. Had to reset couple times due to software glitches. After removing a device X out out BLOCK list, X device wouldn't be able to get black online. Internet still blocked.
3. Phone setup is easy.
4. Remote access is a nice feature.
5. FAMILY TIME BLOCK: wish they have 15 or 30 mins intervals (ex: 05:15, 05:30, 06:00, 06:15) so I could assign devices into RESTRICT/SLEEP time more effectively.

overall, it's alright. Covering my 1200ft home, 1 story.

Man I agree. I would like one more for downstairs - so I have all three floors covered. Can I ask you a question - can you also wire backhaul on the AX55 - or is it just wifi mesh connection? It seems like the AX55 is only two channel - and I wonder how using the 5Ghz channel for mesh may impact speeds? I will keep an eye out for AX55 at a good price. One thing I worry about the ZenWifi routers is their antenna strengths. I noticed if I walk away or go outside the connection speeds drop off drastically. I have an RT-AC88U (the 5GHz channel is toast that is why I won't be using this router), and it was strong a good distance away.
The AX55 can be wired backhaul but I am using it as wireless mesh node on second floor just as your plan. Now I get near 300Mbps connection at a corner that used to get ~50Mbps. The XT8 are on first floor with wired backhaul through a 2.5Gb switch in the basement. I have 600Mbps cable service that I often get near 600Mbps on the first floor through wifi on new devices. The 5GHz-2 actually has lower throughput than the 5GHz-1 for me perhaps due to the support of 160MHz bandwidth of my devices.

general feedback I see on these highly rated mesh routers is that they are very technical and if you can get past that they are the best. I got the CT8s and my main issue was my 2.4 kept dropping for my Eufy cameras. It's been stable now but I had a lot of grief for a week. I have two on wired backhaul. I am looking for a mesh extender like AX55 as well to keep it more stable in the corner of the house that's furthest from the mesh routers.

I tried Orbi 3 unit (350) and X5700 (2unit) both from Costco. X5700 won on 2.5gbps port, better signal (even with 2 units) and 160Mhz band support for clients. Very stable, easy to setup. Management for both are just basic for both. If you look for an easy setup, I recommend X5700.

Parent control is not so good on either, even with subscription.

Thanks for the heads up. Any distinguishing marks or tears on the units or box?

Thank you for your advice. I think I'll wait for a used AX86U from AMZ cause just see a Used-Acceptable AX88U from AMZ around $194 so I got confused now :'(

Keep in mind that the AX5700 uses TP-Link's HomeShield, which has limited options to manage and protect the system in the Basic tier. If those things are important to you, paying for the Pro tier raises the cost of owning/running their devices (US$55/yr). Those are features Asus includes in the price without an add-on subscription.

More companies are heading toward subscription services to get ongoing revenue. Need to factor that in addition to the purchase price.

Where is this supposed $200 TP-LINK product you speak of? Surely said product you're referring to is also tri-band as well? Right?
Cheapest TP-Link tri-band in this price range is Wifi 5 (AX2200). The nice thing is it's a 3-pack.

However the only TP-Link tri-band Wifi6 option is the X90 which retails for $450. Like you're hinting at, Abhi88 has no clue what they're talking about.

*edit* Looks like Costco has a different one for cheaper. $290. Still not close to $200 though. link [costco.com]

The XT8 also has 160 MHz band support.

I got this a couple months back to replace RT-AX55 based mesh (2 units) and not very satisfied especially given its price. Although the single zenwifi router has much better range (almost twice as much) than a single RT-AX55 but it is very unstable. The RT-AX55 system never dropped any connections or occasional slowed down in 3-4 months I had it but this one drops connections and slows down regularly which I know is not because of ISP issues since I speed test within the asus app at those times and it reports full speed. There are several reviews on Amazon with similar feedback. Beware. If you do get it, try not to update firmware (but you are taking security risks with that though).

I can confirm the FW 42095 is the best stable for XT8 right now. Don't try to upgrade higher version, it can make your wifi speed is terrible and drop the signal all the time.

I am an early adopter of this mesh system and have been through many firmware updates and factory resets. My suggestion is not to update to the latest firmware until it has been thoroughly tested. I have to roll back the firmware at least twice. Some of the issues with the faulty firmware include exposing unprotected SSID, mesh disconnection, and wifi connection stability. A couple times, I thought my router is dead. However, there are a couple versions that are very stable. I wish they would test the firmware more thoroughly before releasing it. I feel like a beta tester.

Try changing back to an older firmware version. FW_ZENWIFI_XT8_300438642095 does not have these problems. Annoying, but it would at least solve your problem.

Thank you.
What a coincidence. I just loaded FW_ZENWIFI_XT8_300438642095 and observing the performance.
