So I ordered 2 of these drives last week when I saw the deal, They arrived today in a 12"x16"x9" cardboard box and look at how they were packaged.... No protection other that a 3' string of plastic packaging No Wrap on the Drives at all... Just thrown in the box where I am sure UPS carefully handled them! (yea, right)

Last week I had to return a drive for warranty and they have a specific Packaging requirement or, the drives are returned.... I guess NewEgg didn't have those instructions when they sent me these....

The customer service person I first spoke to didn't know what a hard drive was, (nor did they care, Not their Job).... had no idea why I was upset.... I just have to ask anyone here on this tread see this as a problem? I have been in the computer business for over 30 years I have never encountered anything like this

Does anyone else see the problem or am I just being too hard on them?

It looks like whoever packaged the drive packaged it like it's an SSD, hence, the lack of needed pads and foam protection. I am not sure why it is shipped that way, most OEM/bare drives I bought in the past, comes fully protected inside a solid plastic air-shell/cushion/whatever-you-may-call-it to protect against vibration/bumps/drops.

Thanks for the post, I will not be ordering this (and yeah, I have been working with PC since early 90s with 1Mhz and turbo of 2Mhz speed, yes, we had a turbo button back then)..

Is this from Newegg as well? I also have worked on computers since 286 and Apple II, and I have NEVER seen a hard drive packaged this way. This makes me nervous to hop on this deal. I am not sure how well these drives will endure the trip...
I've received drives like this from Newegg on the past. I returned them all. Got a new shippment, same thing. Returned those and bought them from B&H.

First, $68 is the lowest price I've seen since BF, looks Newegg might have a surplus of stock they want to get rid of ?

I received my 4TB drive last Fri from Newegg, the packaging was OK - it was placed in a thick bubble pocket inside a small box that just fits a 3.5" drive. There was no rattling but somehow the drive was dead on arrival, it made a huge spinning noise as soon as it was powered up. I immediately started the return process, Newegg provided a free UPS shipping label and already issued a full refund earlier this week.

Looks WD also packs their drives in a similar way to yours, see posts #136 and #145 of the following thread,
https://slickdeals.net/f/15439378-wd-red-plus-3-5-sata-hard-drives-cmr-8tb-155-6tb-105-4tb-69-free-shipping?page=10#commentsBox

With poor packaging of these bare drives, I may have to consider buying new drives in full retail packages only in the future. Currently B&H has it for $70,
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/pr...s_cmr.html

But WDBAVV0040HNC-WRSN seems to be the retailed version of WD40EFRX, which is older and has a small cache than WD40EFZX. Can anyone who has bought the same drive from earlier B&H BF deal confirm ?

I ordered 2 6T ones from Amazon. Each is in its own box and is kind of well packed with protection. There is stick on that box, which has the UPC, Model No, Mfg No, and S/N. The box is inside the Amazon shipping box. I registered both and both are with 3 year warrantee.

typically these are shipped in boxes containing individual brown OEM boxes with a bubble clamshell inside, haven't ordered from them this year yet

but they did list a similar packaging (slightly larger bubble in Newegg box):
https://promotions.newegg.com/HDD...ndex.html?
if they didn't do this the packer was at fault.

for anything valuable - run a full surface scan before the return period
I'd run these thru the Hard Disk Sentinel or WD utility before Jan 31st, DOAs do happen
and it's best to know about bad sectors early. The free defective return/exchange beats RMA'ing to WDC and maybe getting a restored/repaired unit.

question for the experts here. when buying one or two drives as a backup, what the standard protocol when you receive them and have no desire to use them right now? perhaps i might use them next year if i get another nas or something fails but for now, it's NIB....do i test it, check it out, etc? thinking about high rate of defective drives. or do i simply rely on warranty?
Red is fine, blue is fine in the 1TB 7200RPM (higher capacities may be SMR if you're ok with it)

they merged the blues and greens long ago, anything over 1 TB is essentially green - green appears in old stock

I got the 8TB of this model on sale last month from Newegg and was surprised it was just in the static bag and bubble wrap crammed in a cardboard box but it wasn't loose in there or anything actually concerning. It felt like an open-box deal rather than a sale on a new product. 🤷

That's a good thing. We don't need tons of packaging on every single thing we buy.

Agreed. Not the point at all, was just kindly letting them know I received minimal packaging as well, but I'm glad we can agree on something.

Thanks. I compared product sheets. They are equivalent in specs (perf, shock, etc). So, no the Reds are not better with reduced vibration, both are the same, including supporting close proximity to other drives. But you correctly overrode me either way. Also, the Reds are stated as 2 dB quieter. The Purple like you say is tuned for more streams. So, if you have a few cameras only, this isn't important. I'll edit my earlier post, but you have it quoted so people can good context here. Appreciate it.

The reds are better. They must be durable to handle a datacenter like environment.

They can be but will be not performance oriented and will perform much slower.

I ordered from Newegg after watching that webpage but now I find it somewhat deceiving. The youtude video is from Nov 4, 2013, and there is the date "© 2000–2016 Newegg Inc" at the bottom of the webpage. So the info may be outdated. I can confirm that the hard drive I received last week was packed differently, it was similar to the photo on the right side but instead of placed in a "engineered inflatable packaging", it was inside a conventional bubble pocket. I cannot say the packaging resulted in my drive DOA, but being thrown around by UPS/USPS for 9 days didn't help.
