All your kid needs to do is practice short casts in the backyard with a 25% loaded spool. It's when they're fully loaded that a bird's nest gets real nasty when it happens.
Dial the resistance high, throw the line, learn to use the thumb to control the spool. It's better to learn how to do this when there's no fishing time being wasted! Then lower the resistance, lengthen the casts, etc.
I never get a bird's nest - maybe little ones when flipping and pulling line out a little too fast but the days of cutting out the nest are long gone ...
How old is he? Baitcasters might not be the best choice for newbies.
Nothing to do with strength. It's a steeper learning curve and requires special technique.
I'd like to learn to use one myself.

He is 14, not a complete newbie. Strong kid. I reckon he can handle it. What Baitcaster would you recomend for under $50? or should i go for this one?

For an adult the technique takes about a week and you will still have trouble getting all the settings correct because the drag if too loose or too much it will Birdsnest very fast and it's not a fun time to learn
Can't really find much info on this reel, as most of the time they are sold as a combo. Ordered one anyway. Can't be that much worse than a Chinese knockoff. Tu

A 14 year old should learn in half the time. Bait casters, like many things, are easier when you grow up using them.
TLDR; This is a great deal for a beginner baitcasting reel, make sure you buy the correct left or right retrieve.
Hello everyone, very experienced fisherman here who primarily uses bait casting style reels.
For a beginner, this abu Garcia reels are great. You will likely outgrow them one day and that's perfectly fine.
For people looking for a reel that they would never want to replace I suggest looking for a deal on a Diawa Tatula, or shimano curado.
This is a perfect reel for a 14 year old just learning baitcasting. Watch some YouTube videos on how to "set" the reel properly. I promise I've taught many people who are less capable than your 14 year old. By taught, I mean being able to operate the reel properly without frequently birds nesting.
Birds nests WILL happen I don't care how experienced you are, I've been in the boat with some accomplished professionals fisherman and have still seen them birds nest.
WORD OF CAUTION. When transitioning from a standard spinning reel to bait casting reels, you need to decide if you want a left side retrieve or right side retrieve. Most spinning reels are left retrieve and buying a left retrieve baitcasting reel is often an easier transition.

EDIT: I see it's available with the matching rod as a combo on their site.

Is it same price? I can't find that combo.
Pretty solid deal on this one. Albeit the high end shimano are more forgiving, hard to argue with a $35 deal for a learning baitcaster
