There are different Quicken codes. Some are "for new subscribers only", some are not. The one that comes with the disk is not, so it works for renewals.
I called Quicken and said I could get it at NewEgg for $31 and they offered me the same price and I don't have to worry about if it is just for new subscribers or wait for it in the mail. I didn't try to get the additional $4 off like this deal. Refreshed my Quicken and it was extended a year. Took 5 minutes tops.
Thanks - purchased Quicken Deluxe for $26.99.
I had been watching the sale prices for a few weeks - common price was/is $31.19 but was holding out for better. Last year I purchased Quicken Deluxe from newegg for $20 but my 1-year subscription is expiring in 2 weeks and cannot wait much longer.
I'm in the same boat. Since I use TurboTax, I get another year of Quicken Starter that will last me until I can get a $20 renewal. Starter won't let me edit my downloads, but it's good enough for a temporary fix.
In the past--I've let mine expire and then renew it around the 3 month and was able to download all transactions from the bank. It gives you an extra 3 months if you don't need it on a monthly basis. It depends on how many months of downloads your bank allows. I think most are at least 90 days.
This is really smart! That's like saving 25% ! I used to update monthly but lately every 3 months is about right. Wish I thought of this!

It should also allow you to install a new customer version and all you have to do is back up your data and reload it and then do the new downloads. If your banks allow 6 months or longer you could save that way also. Depends on how a person uses it. If they need it monthly or just for tax purposes. Only challenge is doing all the categories for the transactions but you could do find and edit and then put the categories in for the same payee.
I find nothing that compares to what it will do. Most of the free options are more along the lines of net worth tracking or just checkbook register apps. It is not always my favorite piece of software but I have found nothing that will let me track my finances like Quicken does. If I stay on top of it I can tell you almost to a penny what I have at any given time. That sounds like it would be an awful amount of work but with downloading of transactions and some minimal cleanup it really does not take much time. I will stress strongly that seeing and tracking your finances can be life changing. It's a powerful tool that can make you change your behavior and gain more wealth.

That doesn't really answer my question. Free options get you down to the penny as well. You may have to download the data manually, but that's it. And i save at least $30 a year

One click downloading from all accounts is most definitely "better" than having to log onto numerous websites and hope they have a download that will import into your software. Maybe you don't think that relevant, but it is a fact. Many of my accounts don't even have downloadable data that can accessed from their website, yet most all come up and download into Quicken. That makes it much better than me having to manually type in transactions.
What free options get you down to the penny, categorize all transactions, pull tax reports, keep old accounts for reference and keep a running balance of my net worth that I can see over twenty years or more? I've tried to find a substitute to Quicken numerous times and only went to it when Money shut down but and they all just come up short. Can you point me to a specific one?
I must have close to 60 accounts some open and some closed that I keep track of. Not all are online friendly. They include numerous investments, 401ks, IRAs, HSAs, credit card and bank accounts. Are you telling me there is a software that would at least do the same as Quicken but require only manually downloading the transactions? Even then it might be with the $30 to not do all that manual downloading. I can usually manage Quicken going through it for maybe an hour a month. Manually going to financial institutions to download transactions would eat up too much time. I find that a better just itself and get much more on top of it that I find needed.
As to free options I looked at Personal Capital which seems to be a popular one but as I said in my answer to you that is more of a net worth app and does not have the features I need and use. Moneydance is paid software but just does not still have the features Quicken has and is $49 with no guaranteed upgrades to newer version.
Just the fact that Quicken brings in all my investment transactions, credit transactions and bank transactions with a click of a button and does it generally cleanly makes it a need be piece of software for me. I even have my mortgage set up to show and keep track of my escrow account. On top of that I managed to keep track of a new home purchase and make sure all numerous transfers of money, fees paid and escrow numbers and transfers to the new mortgage lined up. I even know what I paid in tax withholding before I get a W2.
All that kind of stuff I find better than anything I have seen offered by free alternatives. That is a more direct answer to your question. Let me know what specific or exact feature you would find better and I might be able to clarify more
If you have made up your mind before investigating further, I can't really help you and it seems pointless for you to have asked the question. Sorry if I stepped into some trap and caused offence, I was just trying to be helpful.

Happy customer since 1994
