5900X shouldn't be hotter
The 12 cores of 5900x are broken up into two isolated sets of six
The 8 cores of the 5800x are grouped as one and that's one reason why the 5800x has always been known as hottest Ryzen cpu
The 5800X also runs games a bit faster
If your 5900X is running hotter you might want to check your thermal paste
The old recipe of using a glop of thermal past in the center is not good for 12 cores.
Just smooth a layer of thermal paste on the whole surface of 5900X
You don't have to use a lot - coverage is the goal and not thickness
I would always get the 5700x instead of the 5800x. There is barely a performance difference, but the TDP difference is pretty large. And you can usually get it for 250-275. Overall, I think the 5800x just doesn't have a place in the product lineup, especially with the price difference.
I happened to be near a microcenter at the right time, and picked up a 5700x for 225 plus tax. (250 plus 25 dollar coupon that's still available I think)

If you happen to be blessed with a local microcenter, I'd suggest that route. Otherwise, the 5700x is usually around 275-285 regular price.

Actually, I think I've saved quite a bit of money by not having a Microcenter nearby. Otherwise I'd be there every week picking up their "in store only" deals! Big Grin

2 chainz had to sell one when these were full retail. At least now AMD isnt like "i gotz no competition so we start at $300 now for a 5600x as our lowest tier" right after they dumped all the 3600's for $160 in 2020.
I got one of those, early feb/march 2020 before shit hit the fan

I use a 5900x in my gaming PC
Currently its 45c just surfing
For gaming its usually in 50s - I've never seen 60s that I know of.
I use a Mugen 5 Rev B which is an excellent fan and radiator cooler.
Before the 5900x I had a 5800x and the thing would get near 80c on same cooler - a reason I returned it (AMD says 80C is ok but still).
80c is fine for a 5800x, you need to reference the Max T Junction when it comes to CPU's. I have a i5-10500T which has a Tjmax of 100c. That's basically the boiling point of water, but it's OK, the critical limit of the i5-10500T is 105c but it automatically throttles at 100c so it will never reach that. As for the 5800x, it's 90c, so you're still 10c under Tjmax rating for that CPU. Tjmax is going to be non-damaging temp for the CPU, the manufacturer isn't going to risk running in critical territory and have to fulfill warranty requests.

5600X at sub $200 makes a lot more sense than 5800X for $100 more. There's a new AMD platform right on the horizon, so I'd hate to invest heavily in the soon-to-be-deprecated AM4 platform. If you want to build a budget system with 5600X, then I say go ahead, but if you want to spend more, then wait.
That's kinda debatable. The 5800X is 28% better than the 5600x in benchmarks. I think it really depends on your upgrade schedule. If you're going to keep the PC for a while. Spend the extra now and get the 5800x. Otherwise the 5600x is the play if you'd use the stock cooler. If you're going to buy a after market cooler with the 5600x I'd say it's not worth it and just buy the 5800x for 100 bucks more. That's what I did. Probably overkill for my needs but I want to use VR eventually

Indeed, even consoles are going 8 core and that should be seen as new minimum core count - games are going there full time
More cores can make games run better in ways mere FPS dont show
We can do 100 mph in a new Corvette or 100 mph in an old F-150 truck
Just the "150 mph" doesn't tell the story

Not newegg but this deal is at Amazon too. I bought used like because the description said original packaging damaged box. Get the processor, still covered with thermal paste. Ffs. Does Amazon check anything they get as a return? Someone probably burned this one out, bought a new one and returned this clearly used one in its place.

Moral of the story, don't try and save a few bucks by buying used like new for stuff that matters

If it's sold by Amazon I almost always take the chance if the price is right. Got one for 181 used and while the probability of getting a dud chip is significant, I got lucky and mine works like a charm. Tested it in benchmarks and gaming and passed P95 without any hiccups.

If I got scammed all I have to do is return it and waste maybe 10 minutes of my time installing the CPU.

Yea I usually do too. I never take changes on anything below "Like New" because I've had bad experiences with used but usually when it says "box will be damaged" it's unopened. I'm buying my stuff piecemeal so I can't test the processor right now (I wouldn't use this one given it was clearly installed already anyways due to still having thermal paste all over it). I ended up just rebuying it at 275 from Amazon

anyone can help me decide if i should upgrade from my 3700x to this to pair with my 3080 FTW?? or wait for the next generation AMD or the raptor lake?

The 5800x isnt a great cpu, pair it with the far superior 5800x3d instead for gaming. Or step down to the 5700x or up to the 5900x beast which isnt that much more. As gamers nexus and others have said the 5800x runs waaaY too hot and performs negligibly better than the 5700x. If it were me id go for the 5800x3d with a 3080.

Hey theres a video on youtube from Hardware Unboxed comparing a ryzen 5 3600 and ryzen 7 5800x3d
