Let me be the first to say, I'll wait for the new release that must be coming soon.
Great product. I use mine almost every day for streaming, Steam streaming and Kodi. Much better for kodi than firetv if you have a large library.
Its interesting to see most positive comments are from people who own this and use it daily. The nay sayers look at the spec on paper and call it crap or they dont have a use case for such a powerful player.

What's the difference between this (NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV Pro Streaming Media Player) and the NVIDIA Shield TV | 4K HDR Streaming Media Player [amazon.com] ? The retail price difference is $199 vs $249.

Those who have the tube version, this is nothing like it. And those who say it won't play 4k or struggles with it legitimately have no clue what they're talking about. Ignore the second hand low IQ responses. This is a great purchase at $170.

Same price I bought it for last black Friday. I retired my Chromecast 4k, Firestick 4k and only use this now. There's no way I'd ever go back. It's had it's share of issues since last Nov but that was mainly due to the terrible Google TV updates and not the Shield. Those have mostly been fixed the last few months though. I still have my Plex server on my PC but have plans to move it over to the shield soon, we'll see how it goes.

How good is the cloud gaming? Do I have to pay a monthly fee for it or can I cloud play the game I already own?

No disrespect to Droplist, but I'm skeptical of it being a real deal. It could have lasted a few minutes, or could have been a 3rd party listing with a big delivery charge, or a refurb, or it was for the non-Pro model, or whatever. At $149, it would have quickly been picked up by some deal sites. Not one SD user reported getting one at $149.

Having said that, isn't there something about Chase users getting an additional $20 discount (or something) from BestBuy, getting it around $149 perhaps.

I have the OG Shield from 2017(?). It's one of the best products I've ever bought. It's my plex work horse.

How well does this work as a Plex Server if I want to connect an external drive with large media files? My old QNAP NAS just chugs, but have heard mixed things about the Shield as a Plex Media Server.
When I used the Plex server on the Shield, there is an option for the Shield to shut down the drive when not in use. This is the area where I noticed there was a problem. It will work for weeks until it will suddenly stop. Usually when I haven't used that Shield in a few weeks (I have two Pro 2019). When I disabled the setting to switch off the drive, the Plex problems went away. I think sometimes the Shield has trouble getting the drive back online, particularly if the Shield is serving another streamer in the home. It's similar to sometimes Windows 10 will have a problem being woken up from a deep hibernation mode. It doesn't happen regularly, but sometimes you just have to do a restart to get things working. It can be a pain if your shield is on one floor in the house and it is serving files to another streaming on another floor. because you might have to walk upstairs or to the other room to reboot the Shield with the server.

Today I use a Synology DS920+ with its built-in Plex server on DSM. Ironically I did have a similar problem with the Shield and the Synology too but I can't remember what the setting was that I changed. The Shield essentially wakes up the Synology if it is sleeping...If the Synology is sleeping, that might cause a delay of a few seconds and sometimes the Plex client can time out. Experience has shown me to wait at least 30 seconds between requesting a movie from the plex client, that gives the Synology time to wake up.

If you want to use any streaming app and also use your local media in full quality (meaning blueray UHD remux with HD audio) using Plex/Emby/JF the Shield is pretty much the only option, hence why its remained unchanged since 2015 (the 2019 refresh was all software), priced so high and still sells,.

if however you are ok with using 2 devices, there are better options -

1. for streaming - get a Fire 4kK/Cube/Google Chromecast/Roku Ultra
2. for local media from your NAS - get an AMLogic streaming box, put CoreElec on it for much better AV quality

This is only for those who want the most flexible setup and highest quality. For most people the Shield is enough.

Cons: I do think its overpriced. Nvidia gimps the non pro version deliberately (limiting to 32 bits and other sw hacks) meaning no one buys it even though its perfectly capable. They could've all the features in 2019 to the old device, but didn't.

For those of us who've owned a Shield for a while, its the same story every year - will they introduce a new version? And every year its the same. The Shield is 2015 era hardware and is quite possibly the longest supported CE device thats still considered the best in class.

Its pretty interesting - if Amazon/Google added HD audio support all of a sudden the Fire/Google devices would be a competitor, as they have all the hardware. But they don't care about that market, they are selling to those who only stream.

I just bought Samsung 8K tv. I have my older one hooked up but honestly prefer to use the Smart tv function so I can get as much good picture as possible and minimize any loss in the cables. nVidia is still the best tv box ever. I would like to see a refresh or even better an 8K version. I think what would be the Greatest is if nVidia comes out with a 4K Blueray media streaming that is very powerful!
I think it will be a long time before you see any better picture quality on your 8K tv since most movies are not filmed in 8K yet.
