Well, BB has it on sale for $151 and if you utilize their trade-in program of an old modem/router (15% off), it'll bring the price down to $128. Close to your desired price.

On paper, this modem should last a long time. Latest DOCSIS 3.1 support for speeds up to 2.5G, which most if not all providers do not yet support but as demand for 4K streaming continues I think we will continue to see demand for download speeds increase. At this price, worth the extra over a cheaper DOCSIS 3.0 modem in my opinion.

Also: this is a modem only - no Wi-Fi. You should always get a router/access point separately from a cable modem. Two reasons: Wi-Fi integrated on most modems is terrible, and Wi-Fi tech is evolving faster than cable modem tech.

Why is this modem better than others? My understanding is basically that a modem is a modem is a modem and what matters is the router, but I've seen this one pop up multiple times and people being excited about it.

You need to compare this modem with your current modem and plan. They are not all the same and not having the correct number of channels and/or docsis version can limit your throughput .

This supports speeds up to 2.5 Gbps. Most of the others only go up to 1 Gbps.

Does a (this) modem provide parental control or it would be a router thing? I got free modem from the cable company.
