The Shield can't play YouTube HDR videos.
If you have a good home theater audio setup, this device is almost a must. Lossless audio is possible here where it isn't on any other streaming specific device (mostly applicable to high quality Blu Ray rips and the like). It does excel at other things though too (I.E. AI up scaling).

Unfortunately, it is expensive and uses older hardware that doesn't fully support all the new stuff. It does well with most things though.

There are some people that find it getting to be buggy, while others still have a great experience after 3 years of ownership.

I personally think this is still too expensive for a device using 3 year old hardware, but I would buy a new version of this. However, I'm not sure if Nvidia will update the hardware again.

If you just want a device that works and you aren't worried about playing high quality Blu Ray rips, this is probably overkill - I'd probably look at the firetv, Roku, ccwgtv, Apple 4k, etc.

Here's a decent discussion on Reddit comparing the Apple TV 4k / Firecube 3 / Shield Pro TV - https://www.reddit.com/r/ShieldAn...are_button

Edit - it's also at Best Buy and B&H Photo for the same price.
They have milked this hardware for to long now. It was the best of the best in 2016 but has been losing it's edge year by year. It has become a pain to reboot every few days after the Google update.

I find if really hard to justify almost $200 for a glorified Android device.. LOL. Rather put that towards a medium gaming PC for the living room than this.

Better to buy Apple TV for this price?
I'd also like to know. Currently frustrated with the buggy nature of the Roku Ultra with my AVR. I want something that just works so I don't have to tech support for my wife and son every time it freezes up or doesn't sync audio/video. It sounds like this Shield has it's own issues. I'd gladly buy an Apple TV if that's the best option out there.

Why? What new capabilities is this device missing that has been released lately?

For the love of god!!!
Can anybody explain to me how to pair this device with my Harmony Elite/hub via bluetooth???

I've tried everything I could find from any source I could find. The closest I ever got to success was using android app but the only thing the Elite/hub would control via bluetooth was the android app. Refuses to pair with Elite/hub via bluetooth.

Mine is the older version of the Shield, but I struggled connecting it to my harmony... A LOT. It would work for a period of time and then suddenly stop. I eventually went back using my LG remote as a semi-universal remote. Not ideal, but if you end up figuring it out, please let us know!

yes - unless you need true atmos pass-thru for local content (i.e. Plex). that's something that currently just does not work on atv.

I just upgraded from this to an apple tv 4k. Get the apple tv. The shield is laggy and buggy these days. The apple tv experience is so much better.

I gave up with Bluetooth and connected a flirc in the usb port (with a usb extension wire). The harmony to shield over IR works flawlessly. Have it using Emby, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.

Really surprised how much Nvidia has been able to milk this same platform. Bought mine I think back on 2017, the version that had the 2 controllers and I'm still enjoying it. Still receiving OS updates from Nvidia and still feeling smoother than a lot of other newer Android devices. The game controller that came with it gave up the ghost already but all the other things are still working fine. The game controller I think died because of the battery.

Would I buy one of these on 2022 for $175? I doubt it, specially for how old this platform is. Save a little bit more and you could grab an Xbox S for $235 or $250.

Great device though.

"Old" hardware but nothing else still comes close.

Question - can I still roll back to 8.2.3 if this comes with 9.x from the factory?

Old tech Amazon cube 3rd generation better...
Ya that's totally wrong. It does not have the playback capabilities of even the older generation Shield let alone the advantages of the game streaming.

My reason for not being able to justify this at this point is that the device itself is so old that chances are that Nvidia will finally replace it within the next year or two. Pricing will most likely be higher than $175 but it won't be that much higher.
