The Shield can't play YouTube HDR videos.
If you have a good home theater audio setup, this device is almost a must. Lossless audio is possible here where it isn't on any other streaming specific device (mostly applicable to high quality Blu Ray rips and the like). It does excel at other things though too (I.E. AI up scaling).

Unfortunately, it is expensive and uses older hardware that doesn't fully support all the new stuff. It does well with most things though.

There are some people that find it getting to be buggy, while others still have a great experience after 3 years of ownership.

I personally think this is still too expensive for a device using 3 year old hardware, but I would buy a new version of this. However, I'm not sure if Nvidia will update the hardware again.

If you just want a device that works and you aren't worried about playing high quality Blu Ray rips, this is probably overkill - I'd probably look at the firetv, Roku, ccwgtv, Apple 4k, etc.

Here's a decent discussion on Reddit comparing the Apple TV 4k / Firecube 3 / Shield Pro TV - https://www.reddit.com/r/ShieldAn...are_button

Edit - it's also at Best Buy and B&H Photo for the same price.
They have milked this hardware for to long now. It was the best of the best in 2016 but has been losing it's edge year by year. It has become a pain to reboot every few days after the Google update.

My favorite things about the Nvidia Shield Pro is that the 4K upscaling is absolutely incredible. I also love the fact that advanced Bluetooth codecs can be used when connecting wireless headphones or earbuds instead of the traditional SBC?

I'm surprised no one is talking about the #1 reason to get a Shield > GeForce Now (Experience)
Nvidia Video cards are hands down the number one seller for PC gamers. The Shield takes this to the next level allowing you to game stream directly from your PC to the LR TV. It also plays Android games and most all the Emulators you could possibly want. Along with all the popular Streaming apps and VPN support there's not much it can't do.

Don't pass this up just because it's getting a little old, it's still a solid device on many levels.
Last purchased Oct 29, 2019 ...as I recall it was first day this model was released

This isn't really a deal. It released at the price of $199 when it debuted, but it's always been on sale for $175 and no less, smh.

It was $170 during amazon day. Glad I picked one up. But some rumblings that after upgrading to android 11, the Amazon firecube is faster(??).

Is there a way to control the device without the remote? I lost the remote during my move and my controller doesn't seem to respond to the hardware because it may be out of date. The Bluetooth keyboard doesn't have a response either/

Is this still the same hardware on the original Shield? Was considering getting this til I saw your comment. I still have the original.
There have been three revisions to the Shield - 2015 (OG), 2017, and 2019. This is the 2019 pro version.

I'd recommend looking at the differences and making a decision based on your use-case.

I've had one for about a year. It runs my Plex server , it's stable. I also use it as an emulator for 32 bit consoles. No complaints.

It's a use case scenario, I have the 2017 version, if you are running plex server or require audio passthrough to the receiver, there isn't a better alternative. For everything else, there are much better and cheaper options. $175 is still too steep of a price for this box imo, given the age of the hardware.

People need to stop with the notion that anything is better or even as good as the Shield. Plays lossless audio. Has every streaming app I can think of, including Kodi. Can play games on its own, emulators for other systems, and can play streamed games from your PC if you have an Nvidia video card. You can connect a USB tuner and an antenna and have OTA and record it if you have a USB hard drive attached. That was a big deal for me a few years ago, but not so much now since I have YouTube TV, and I can just DVR shows on that.

I bought this when I decided to get rid of DirecTV a few years ago so the $200 I paid was nothing because it saved me money in the long run. It allowed me to get rid of my HTPC, too. I defended HTPCs for a long time when other people were abandoning them. But after looking into the Shield it did everything the HTPC did and did it more seamlessly. The only thing it doesn't do is play discs but I'll live with that.

Which Fire stick are you using? From my extensive testing, the Fire Cube is the most responsive currently. I say extensive testing because I've been temporarily disabled and unable to work so all I have is time to screw around with this stuff right now.
I have all 4k sticks. Haven't tried any cubes but I will probably try the shield on the main tv.

I gave up with Bluetooth and connected a flirc in the usb port (with a usb extension wire). The harmony to shield over IR works flawlessly. Have it using Emby, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.
Appreciate that information, ordered flirc and usb extension. Is there anything I should know about setup with the harmony elite/hub over ir?
