The Shield can't play YouTube HDR videos.
If you have a good home theater audio setup, this device is almost a must. Lossless audio is possible here where it isn't on any other streaming specific device (mostly applicable to high quality Blu Ray rips and the like). It does excel at other things though too (I.E. AI up scaling).

Unfortunately, it is expensive and uses older hardware that doesn't fully support all the new stuff. It does well with most things though.

There are some people that find it getting to be buggy, while others still have a great experience after 3 years of ownership.

I personally think this is still too expensive for a device using 3 year old hardware, but I would buy a new version of this. However, I'm not sure if Nvidia will update the hardware again.

If you just want a device that works and you aren't worried about playing high quality Blu Ray rips, this is probably overkill - I'd probably look at the firetv, Roku, ccwgtv, Apple 4k, etc.

Here's a decent discussion on Reddit comparing the Apple TV 4k / Firecube 3 / Shield Pro TV - https://www.reddit.com/r/ShieldAn...are_button

Edit - it's also at Best Buy and B&H Photo for the same price.
They have milked this hardware for to long now. It was the best of the best in 2016 but has been losing it's edge year by year. It has become a pain to reboot every few days after the Google update.

The year is 2026, the 2017 Nvdia Shield is on sale for 164.99 for Black Friday
And SD people are still having completely different experiences with it, and arguing about how old the hardware is VS nothing else does what it does VS cost.

It's comical. A tool's age doesn't matter if it still outperforms all other options. These are just people who can't stand the thought of not having the latest most modern toys at all times.

Now of course I've oversimplified that. If you don't care about installing any frontend you'd like, silky smooth 4K HDR, Atmos, TrueHD etc. and just want to see a smooth interface while you show off your collection without actually playing anything... Then ya a more modern apple tv might be more your cup of tea.

I own both 2017 and 2019 shield tv Pro. The 2017 definitely needs rebooting once every other months but the 2019 does not as it's been steady. 4k and upscaling looks great on my 77 LG C1 Oled using either streaming or Kodi (NAS). I may pick up a new one when they release one to replace my 2017 shield tv pro.

I can connect my HDD to my Sony X900F and most movies play on Kodi. Would the picture quality be any better with Shield TV?

Why? What new capabilities is this device missing that has been released lately?
Speed. It's laggy. I've had it for years but even on a new install it has a lot of delays. Doesn't even have auto-framerate refresh. I love it, it just needs refreshes like every other device.

Yes, you can get Tone Mapping through the Shield.
