To me it seems like the Asus setup is better than this one but I dont know a ton about computers.

Performance wise, they should be pretty close because the Vivobook is thermal-throttled due to more power-hungry components (cpu, memory, display). The Thinkbook is a more balanced laptop with better battery life and more than adequate performance for daily use. But if you encode a lot of videos and compile a lot of codes, the Vivobook will complete these tasks quicker (20% - 40%).

I purchased the Vivobook and was debating returning it and buying the Thinkbook but I'll keep the Vivobook based on the fact that it sounds like it has better performance at the cost of battery life.
3+ month wait...and may get delayed further as Lenovo is notorious for shipping delays, lost items, and supply chain issues. By that time the next gen computers will be around the corner.

The igpu is enough for Rocket League and esports, but the refresh and response rate really start to matter when you get competitive.

Net is that ThinkBook is Lenovo's SMB design - this HP machine is consumer grade. Caveat emptor. I have a Lenovo machine with a 6000 CPU and it runs great (it's not this ThinkBook) - use it for work. I've found that 13" is a little small at times - so check the keyboard layout to make you don't get compromised key layout.
I agree in terms of your soldered memory comments - it is done for quality reasons (note that Apple has soldered their memory for years, and now solders their HDDs; Dell is soldering both on the XPS13). I worry about HP - they have lost a ton of market share in the last year (check out the IDC and Gartner PC market share numbers - next update in about 2 weeks).
