Not to take away anything from this great projector, but the LCD panels are natively 1080p resolution and utilize "pixel shifting" tech similar to DLP XPR. The full number of pixels for 4k is still rendered which provides a perceptually near equivalent of native 4k. However keep in mind that small static text will not be as clear as a native 4k monitor/tv (for example) so this projector may not be suitable for "monitor like" 4k usage scenarios
Pre-pandemic, you can get the very close prior model (5040) at the Epson refurb store for under 1500 bucks pretty regularly. Those who did got a steal on an amazing projector. Then when pandemic/supply chain issues hit, it was retail price only, if you could even get one at all. So, although this is a small discount, nice to see them at least going on sale a little bit again.

For those not familiar with this model, these things are monsters, throw an absolutely amazing picture with amazing colors. While not true 4k, it's superior to 1080p and I see no pixels at 120". I ran this one for a couple years, then when it broke got an Epson laser (the LS11000). Yes, these are expensive, but to quote Ferris Bueller, if you have the means, I highly recommend you pick one up.

(Edited to correct the refurb deal was on the prior model)
This a physically large projector so make sure you have room and proper support if you're ceiling mounting it, but it's been a great experience for me in a light controlled room with a 120" screen over the last year. I managed to get it on sale at the time for $2799 and cashed in all my by Best Buy rewards and credit card points to bring it under $2k. We love it.

Projector Central has a really useful calculator for figuring out throw distance, screen size, and brightness to see how well it (or most any projector) will work in your room...

I'm using this projector now on a 131" screen - very nice! Was a good upgrade from my JVC 1080P which crapped out... this is one of the better values out there... I'd like to go back to JVC at some point, but I'm not ready to spend several thousand dollars to do it... I feel perfectly content with the image I'm getting from this Epson...

Can you share your thoughts on 5050ub vs LS11000? I'd like to upgrade and trying to decide if 11000 has a better picture than 5050! For me contrast, color pop and sharpness are of interest. Thanks!

I would not use this for PC usage, agreed... the pixel shifting does take away from text readability at 4k.

However, I trialed this versus the Sony vw295; for motion pictures, the visual quality difference was negligible for me. I put the cost savings I put into a zero edge projector screen with ambient lighting.

I did buy this prepandemic, for 1400 at best buy after GC. Best purchase. The lens shifting on this is a godsend for placement, as well as changing from 16:9 to 2.35:1.

I'm trying to decide on this or the BenQ HT5050. I'm building my home theater but it is an open concept with the right side of it opened to a hangout/gaming room. How noticable is the screen door effect on the Epson? This will be mainly used for movies.

I had an LS11000 for a bit. It was great... phenomenal picture except for the slightly washed out blacks (I'd seen pictures and thought they were overblowing it, but it's real). You probably know, but the LS12000 apparently has the blacks of the 5050ub, but the LS11000 definitely does not.

Basically, a lot of people think the 5050ub is superior to the LS11000 simply because of the contrast and blacks. I guess it comes down to whether you value contrast/blacks (5050UB) or laser/120hz (LS11000). The 5050ub is definitely the better value and I don't see a sale on the LS11000 any time soon. It's kind of mad that the 5050 is almost (not really) half as much when it's a comparable image with better blacks.

And like a poster above said, be aware that they're both very, very large projectors.

The 5050 has quite a bit better contrast. The LS11000 is basically a laser version of the 4010 and the LS12000 is a laser version of the 5050/6050. If you don't need the laser or gaming features of the LS11000 then I'd recommend the 5050.

Measured contrast levels are going to be 1200:1 vs 4500:1 with the 5050 having a manual iris that can be closed down to get to around 6000:1. Ignore manufacturer contrast numbers.

This one only shifts 2 ways so it is actually half 4K but still double 1080p. For movie content it is still quite good and its contrast advantage over anything in its range helps with perceived sharpness.

Sounds like you got a great deal. I was just noting that pixel shifting is a good solution for "expanding" the native resolution and no one should be afraid of it. Likewise for DLP projectors (as there always seems to be someone complaining it's "fake 4k"). There are several other factors that determine PQ, no one should be getting hung up on the pixel shifting. If I had to come up with any negative for this Epson, it would be LCD panels can degrade over time (but probably longer than anyone is going to keep the device) and sometimes the pixel screen door effect can degrade PQ but I highly doubt that is an issue with the Epson as it seems highly regarded in reviews.

Deciding between 4010 vs 5050 - now is the $500 difference really worth ?
