lmao, crippled laptop? This laptop can do far more than an ipad can because Apple limits ipads to iOS, which is extremely limiting. My older mother tries to do all her stuff on an ipad and about once a week she runs into a problem, poorly designed websites dont display their forms right, she needs to digitally sign a document on a website that doesnt load on iOS, she cant find an identical app equivalent to the software she uses on laptop, etc. After confirming the issue isnt with her poor tech skills, I have to tell her to pull out her laptop and do it there.
An ipad as an only device isnt practical at all.

This laptop will do everything you want, as long as its not gaming or heavy productivity work.
I've been extremely happy with the one I got on a previous deal. The screen is gorgeous. I bought it for someone who does very basic tasks like emailing, Excel, YouTube, so I wasn't too concerned by there only being 8GB of memory.
Also available from BB via eBay
https://www.ebay.com/itm/325333918411

For those who are interested, I bought 3 units of this when it was $500 in Jul last year. One of them cannot power up after using for around 6 months. Sent it back to ASUS to check, there is problem with the RAM. Since it's soldered, motherboard replacement was required.....

Zenbook usually has better build quality and designs.

EDIT:
I think I would try to avoid buying laptop with soldered RAM in the future (even if it has an empty SODIMM slot)

Is there a concern with OLED burn in as well?

I would be okay if 16GB or more ram was soldered. I also would avoid with soldered SSD.

Yes there is but more importantly is the flicker . I hate my iPhone because of that . It gives me a terrible headache . I wished I did not trade in my older iPhone with ips screen.

I have one, alongside a MacBook air m2, I love that screen in the Asus, the performance has been too notch (battery life is average) the keyboard and trackpad are both excellent (one of the best trackpads on a window laptop I've used, laptop is attractive looking and such a nice bright screen with a 90 hz refresh rate, hope this helps!

I agree 100% with your comments about iPad vs. laptop. I am without personal laptop for a month or so and trying simple things on iPad, like checking/deleting/writing is so limited. On top of that, I can install few apps/programs that I can't on iPad, one of them is Tax software.

I am debating between MacBook vs laptop. MacBook costs more but last long vs. laptops in my experience after 2 years starts slowing down.

As others have said, regular folks would just choose an iPad over a crippled laptop at the same price range.
There is always someone saying stupid stuff like this in these threads. No one is getting this laptop for performance. This is plenty for regular folks.

Please be smarter.

Windows is going to consume 2GBs of ram before you even open an application in modern Windows. Most modern chromium based browsers then consume another 0.5 GB when opened. Open a couple more tabs and you can see where I'm going with this...

How long till I can find a 14" 2k OLED with a 12th gen i5 and 16GB ram for under like $700 from any reputable brand? The vivo X or whatever was close but had terrible thermals

I've loved mine and I use it all the time for work and personal use with quite a few apps open and have yet to run into an issue with the 8GB of memory. Performance has been great. It runs better than the laptops I have access to at work, and those have an 11th gen i5 with 16GB of memory.

I've had multiple instances of Chrome open with multiple tabs in each and have never had a performance issue, while also running an RDP session and putty at the same time. Granted I did upgrade to a faster Gen4 NVME, but the memory has never been a problem for me. I got mine for well under 500 and would happily pay 500 for it.

Hmm. Do I keep the Acer 516 GE Chromebook or get this one? ($449 vs $549 / Chrome OS VS Windows).
Darn near identical hardware, the screen is big and clear on the Acer, but the OLED is pretty darn good on the Asus...
Do I really need Windows? Chrome (and Linux apps) does almost everything.

Just curious about some comparisons. Thanks

I would 100% get the Windows machine over a Chromebook, especially with a $100 price difference. The Chromebook will limit the tasks you can complete to some degree. The screen is also very nice on the Asus.
