The posts about MicroCenter well they don't have many locations and none in my state. Then I would have to drive to Massachusetts and pay sales tax. The Cambridge store has pushy on commission salesmen like a used car saleman too. What's the point of posting deals online that can't be purchased online.

There's a very, almost insignificant, small performance difference between the regular 5600 vs. the x. I would say it's not worth the 15% increase in price. There will be rare instances where the X will perform up to 5% better.
I'm not sure what benchmarks you are referring to but there's is a significant percentage difference in FPS in gaming. We're talking double percentages depending on the game and resolution. 5% boost on clock speed is beneficial to cpu bound games. I would agree that you have to look at cost per performance but a $10 to $20 difference under 200 is insignificant. Here's one link to FPS scores.

If I already have a 5600g with a rx 6600xt, would it be worth it to get the 5600?
Personally I think you'll be fine for a bit. If you really wanted to upgrade I'd keep an eye out for the 5800X3D. The 5600g isn't a slouch and I doubt you'll see a huge measurable difference upgrading to a 5600.

I've never even heard of hwcooling, no offense. I've done extensive research on long-time reputable places like Tom's Hardware, Tech Power-up, and Gamers Nexus. I try to avoid confirmation bias, so I'll consider the HWcooling benchmarks, but not a single review from any of the big name reviewers indicate that the upgrade to the X is worth it.

I gathered some links for you to get a better understanding of what I'm seeing from the bigger more reputable reviewers that I know of:

Quotes for cliff notes:

"The Ryzen 5 5600 is also basically a 5600X-killer — it doesn't make sense to spend the extra cash for such slim gains". - Tom's hardware
"The Ryzen 5 5600X is only 2.1% faster—almost exactly the same number as in application performance tests. Even processors like the mighty Ryzen 5800X and 5900X are only 5% faster." - Tech Power-up
"...we're looking at on average a 1.5 to maybe 3 percent range of difference...our opinion not worth it..." - Gamers Nexus

While that may be true in an overall look of the processor, it has been proven to be able to have a 15%-20% in FPS gain for gaming, which is very important for those building a pc for gaming. Check Tom's hardware
We do lots of gaming, but 99% of it is casual games where frames per second is not very important at all. We don't do any 3D shooters, for example - more like top down games, card games, etc.

It's a b450 motherboard, so I don't think we would see much of a difference. I just want a capable processor for video compression, and I want it at a good price.

I'm not knocking the 5500. It's a great processor at the price, but misrepresentation is just that. If the 5500 works for you, great. But your statement glossed over an important aspect to a lot of people.

Can anyone recommend a good low cost board for this? Mainly going to be a HTPC with occasional gaming. Pairing with 16gb memory and GTX 2070 Super from a system that died.
What form factor are you looking for: ITX, ATX, microATX, E-ATX, etc?

This coupled with a good inexpensive MB is exactly what im looking for in a value upgrade from my 10400.
No real value the 10400 is adequate enough and on par with this processor. I'd hold tight.

If you want video compression that is better served in a GPU by far or QSV. So I would tend toward QSV (Intel) (no F processor) or hw compression offload in a GPU. This processor is not going to do it for hw compression. I personally have a 12400 for this and it does the duty and I don't need the extra encoders of the 12500 or the extra $40-$50. I also like it because it doesn't have E-cores so I have to worry about the scheduler or "force" update to Win 11.

Yeah I think i came to the same conclusion, 15%ish isnt enough of a bump for an upgrade, will wait until 7xxx and DDR5 come down in price a bit

ATX or Micro ATX. Needs a PCI slot for the 2070 Super.

Ok... This is the ATX board that I own: ASUS Prime X570-P [amazon.com]
It's been running strong since building my first Ryzen (3000) rig back in Dec 2019 and I haven't had any issues. I got mine on discount for $127.50 (not including taxes) brand new at the time. You might have to update the firmware via Bios Flashback IF the board you get is only prepped for 3000-series CPUs and not 5000. The board doesn't come w/ all the fancy bells and whistles such as onboard WiFi and Bluetooth, attached I/O shield, etc. which I prefer that way since I'll always have the option of connecting USB powered devices capable of those features, and also in order to turn my rig into a Hackintosh which can be very finicky a/b certain internal components. If you prefer a board that comes included w/ those missing feature sets I mentioned then you can try the ASUS AM4 TUF Gaming X570-Plus [newegg.com] since it's very similar to my board.

Don't waste your money. 5600G has 16mb L3 cache vs 32mb on 5600/5600x. But if you youtube benchmarks the difference is very subtle. About 10~13 fps gain. And it depends if the game is Cpu driven like for strategy games.

5600G is same price as 5600X if not more bc it has that iGPU. Save ur money and go for a better gpu if ur not satisfied with the 6600xt. 6700xt is 330ish rn and I get 90 fps avg on high settings most games.

You have to watch out for shills (self promoters) here on SD. They will tell you to buy buy buy when performance increase is very small. That's a good chip.
Ask questions on Reddit and look at benchmarks on YT yourself.
