To be fair, I have an M1 with 8gb and have no trouble throwing a bunch of programming and dev work at it. I'm talking android emulators running while having multiple IDEs running and building...

I wanted to get this one, but after watching this I not so sure. Might go with m1 if I find good deal. Although, this is for laptop, I assume its same with mini.

… and Microsoft is obliging by obsoleting perfectly good Windows 10 hardware with Windows 11. (Yah, security, bla, bla, bla). Windows 10 can run well on 8-10 year old hardware if it has an SSD. HP, Dell, Lenovo, and Microsoft itself (Surfaces) demanded Microsoft push new PC sales. So unlike Windows 10 that can run fine even on Windows 7 machines…

Never thought we'd dump Windows but our mobile stuff - phones and tablets - are already Apple and we have one MacBook Air M1. October 2025 (end of Win10) is coming fast and these Mac Mini M2's at $499 are looking very tempting.

Bonus 1: Loving the automatic - and 100% complete - seamless back up of all Apple devices as well as the seamless cross platform texting, internet, copy/pasting, photos, Find me, AirTags, etc…

Bonus 2: With Windows 11, Microsoft went all in with Google Android mobile integration, providing another reason for Apple mobile folks to leave Microsoft.

[EDIT:] I'm old enough to not be defensive about down flags on the anonymous Internet, but having a large number of Windows 10 machines in our home, I am sincerely interested in the specific counter arguments to my comment. Where, specifically, is the comment flawed, particularly for mainstream Internet browsing, streaming, email, etc…? Are the down flaggers gamers? I'd totally understand that but please say so.
To be fair a mac will offer less updates than a windows machine. My 2013 macs are pretty much obsolete while my more than a decade laptop still has win 10 which has support for a couple more years... Also seamless platform is available to all platforms including windows, Android, and Macs, not really an exclusive pro. It's fine if you like Apple integration and whatnot but spouting misinformation is not good...

This is just such a good deal, I don't really understand how apple did it. Fully expected the m2 mac mini to start at $699 and not budge on price but out of the gates it dipped to $500.
They cut corners and put a $1.50 NVRAM in there and 8 gig. make it user inaccessible to control super-fat margin upgrades. They also job out their own processor, and they use a 10 year old case design. If you look at Apples pricing strategy they charge exorbitant fees for any upgrades--many times its worth. For instance to go from 256 to 512 GB may cost them $2 but it will cost you $200 which is a 100x profit. So if only 5-6 suckers per hundred go for 512 they have more than cleared the margin for the "SSD" part.

So they use this gimped version as the "loss leader" in hopes you pay for upgrades that have margins 80% or more and folks like you "wonder" how Apple does it at this price point.

Also its not all roses. Earlier this week I read that Apple shut down m2 production 100% so projections are not what they thought and m1 still around. So it seems that in this economy that price sensitivity is returning.

Full disclosure I have an m2 pro mini and I love it but I had to drop $1200 on it (I also had to buy an external SSD thunderbolt for real storage) and sadly it does not have AV1 encode/decode acceleration which I think is a travesty beyond all since Apple is a founding member and AV1 will surely take over in the next few years.

It's disconcerting to be sure, even if you're not going to notice most of the time. Personally I chose the Costco M1 closeout at $400 over the M2 base at $500.

completely agree. it's always a value proposition with Apple - they're very crafty in their pricing strategy to the point of annoyance. I'm not so sure the M2 downturn is a sign of anything in particular though - it could just mean the M3 process is further along than expected and it's cheaper for Apple to transition as soon as possible. I mean we really have no idea how long it takes Apple to build up a significant supply of CPUs.

Just 8 GB, is it 2015?
You do realize that 8Gb of RAM in 2023 is a hell of a lot different than 8Gb of RAM in 2015, right?

Im an apple fan my last comment was legitimate no need to erase

apple products are not selling look it up. So yes the prices are coming down. Apple halted its production especially now the m3 has been leaked

I will not get into the "8 gb" debate, because I feel like it's been discussed ad nauseam in every other M1/M2 Mac thread. I can only speak from my personal experience with an M1 Mini and M1 Air, both with 8 gb, that this is a lot of performance/$. It's an amazing entry price for anyone considering entering the Mac OS environment, with a system that will smoke all use cases for the average family and even handle photo/video editing (very well, I might add) and even some gaming (if you temper your expectations).

Is x86 and x64 emulations
still lacking for people that need it on these M2s? Parallels subscription the only solution?

Don't worry, Apple will leave you unsupported with a future OS, as well. I have a Mid-2014 Macbook Pro that no longer gets OS upgrades even though it's working perfectly fine.

m3 process node is more costly than m2 and unless it is adding AV1 enc/dec there is not a lot that they can really offer over the m2, and as you can see there are deals going on left and right for mac laptops and now new minis. The average "joe" has no idea the m3 is being dangled out there. So while I do not have insider info I can say that the market is probably softening. I mean Micron just posted a horrible loss and I read that semi demand is at a 40 year low (from the drunken days of 2021-2022). So this may just be people have their stuff, but I would suspect that the gogo days of the last few years are over for a breather.

VMware workstation also now.

I moved my Windows VM to my x86 server and now remote in to them, works perfectly fine and don't have to worry about bugs, interactions or slow-downs.

If you are a hobbiest actually interested in updating old systems supposedly it can be setup to run on a Pentium 4. Personally I just use a stripped down version of Windows 7 on my oldish low ram PCs. For businesses I understand the official support requirement being irritating.

As of February 2023, Windows holds 57.37% of the desktop OS market in the US, macOS holds 29.62% and Chrome OS holds 7.47%. Linux holds 2.55%, whereas other miscellaneous desktop operating systems hold 2.97%. Apple really wants to step up the game.
No way MacOS has almost 30% desktop market share. Where are you getting those stats?

If this is really true, game developers should really be porting more games to MacOS.

I'm running a late 2012 mini it's slow but fine. Catalina had to be installed to keep my Google 1 compatibility, Mohave was faster.
