To be fair, I have an M1 with 8gb and have no trouble throwing a bunch of programming and dev work at it. I'm talking android emulators running while having multiple IDEs running and building...

I wanted to get this one, but after watching this I not so sure. Might go with m1 if I find good deal. Although, this is for laptop, I assume its same with mini.

Great computer for $500. I have a M1 and super happy with it. However, hate to say it, 16GB would make it twice as nice

… and Microsoft is obliging by obsoleting perfectly good Windows 10 hardware with Windows 11. (Yah, security, bla, bla, bla). Windows 10 can run well on 8-10 year old hardware if it has an SSD. HP, Dell, Lenovo, and Microsoft itself (Surfaces) demanded Microsoft push new PC sales. So unlike Windows 10 that can run fine even on Windows 7 machines…

Never thought we'd dump Windows but our mobile stuff - phones and tablets - are already Apple and we have one MacBook Air M1. October 2025 (end of Win10) is coming fast and these Mac Mini M2's at $499 are looking very tempting.

Bonus 1: Loving the automatic - and 100% complete - seamless back up of all Apple devices as well as the seamless cross platform texting, internet, copy/pasting, photos, Find me, AirTags, etc…

Bonus 2: With Windows 11, Microsoft went all in with Google Android mobile integration, providing another reason for Apple mobile folks to leave Microsoft.

[EDIT:] I'm old enough to not be defensive about down flags on the anonymous Internet, but having a large number of Windows 10 machines in our home, I am sincerely interested in the specific counter arguments to my comment. Where, specifically, is the comment flawed, particularly for mainstream Internet browsing, streaming, email, etc…? Are the down flaggers gamers? I'd totally understand that but please say so.
As a semi-old-timer who has been committed to Microsoft over Apple, I agree on every point you raise. I've been a beta tester for a long time for all sorts of software and hardware, and Windows 11 reminds me of the version that everybody hated (ME). It feels tacky and clunky, and even if it seems functionally identical to 10, it adds extra layers of BS and advertising into simple functions. The right-click menus in Explorer are twice as aggravating because it's another element of the software trying to think for me. The OS itself is at least twice as heavy of a major data miner as 10 was, and it takes some serious work to limit it without breaking basic functionality. If you dare disable Cortana, the search features are nearly useless.

On the other hand, OS X is a relatively solid OS that doesn't have features removed, renamed, hidden, or hijacked with every "update" BUT the file system is not nearly as intuitive as Windows. I do love the linux shell, even though I grew up programming in MS-DOS, because it can really compound the overall usefulness of the machine without requiring a VM.

I picked up a MacBook Air a year ago for my wife and I think Apple really nailed it with their next-gen technology which completely took me by surprise because I had no idea it was a thing they were working on. I still hate that their systems are not as customizable and I can't just buy a unit and pop in some extra RAM, but I might bite the bullet on this one and see if I can make the shift without feeling like I'm sacrificing too much. I know gaming is still an issue, but I do most of that with my Switch and most of my PC gaming is like retro-styled low resource gaming, which run like butter on my Air.

This might be a weird question, but can you run the Apple TV interface/apps on a Mac Mini? What I really want is something that functions like Apple TV 80% of the time (with full remote support, Atmos output etc.) that I can pop out to OS X and use for web, mail, light games etc. 20% of the time.

Running something like Kodi or Plex would be similar.

Apple used to have an application called "front row" that was expressly for this purpose. Obviously that would cut into Apple TV sales so it did not persist. I concur with the Kodi/Plex recommendation, but probably not if your TV is Dolby Vision-capable. The Apple TV is very good at what it does.

Yeah it's insane, but pretty typical for Apple tax. Guessing you have never bought an Apple product before?
I used to run Apple computers back in the 90s before they became trendy. As soon as I could afford to purchase my own things, I built a PC and never looked back. That being said, I did purchase an iPad for my gf last year, because that's specifically what she wanted to use as a drawing tablet and the price compared to other tablets in the same range was negligible. I personally don't use apple computers because 1, they are too expensive and 2, I can do much more with a PC, apart from using certain pieces of apple-centric software, like Final Cut Pro or Logic, which there are plenty of alternatives for PC that are as good or better. I just find it sad that Apple, one of the wealthiest companies in the industry, has to place such an exorbitant tax on their products.

For all those wondering 8gb on a Mac is NOTHING like 8gb on a pc. I have a used 2013 8gb macbook(because I'm poor) and I just now after 10 years felt the slowdown. My nephew gave me his "'old" 2019 Alienware 16gb, and it noticeably slower

Edit the Alienware is 32gb actually. Sorry I'm not a computer guy. It's i7 32gb 256
Whatever was wrong with that Alienware pc, it wasn't lack of Ram. A windows pc with 8GB can be lightning fast for basic tasks.

Most of the performance issues with windows are caused by 3rd party software/spyware and misses updates or bad drivers. Especially antivirus, crappy antivirus software will totally destroy the performance of many machines. I bet if you reloaded windows on the above mentioned pc with a fresh install and wiped out all the crapware that is slowing it down you would be surprised how fast it actually is.

Yea. 3rd party apps are every app? It ask me to update all the time and won't let me skip it. I hate that. I think it's called an alpha

Rather than buy a new windows machine... To each their own, just saying logic does not make since. You get all of this time.out of it, but jump because it's old? Yet you buy new apple and the world is great.

Like all applw people who go from old crappy junky cheap windows machine to apple... Like had you spent the same on windows, would you have the same experience or is the clout of the fruit just what it is?

Glad you are happy, just always boggle my mind when people give a reason that does not compute with me...

Ultimately we buy what we want. I am device agnostic, so I just all with no loyalty...
You cannot get Apple quality from Windows, at any price.

Apple has a long term threat from the sheer masses of K-12 kids in America who use Chromebooks at school and at home.

I'm curious how that plays out over the next decade, especially with "full-featured" laptops far less necessary.
Visit a college campus, 90% of the laptops will be MacBooks. It's the old people still clinging to their Windows.

As of February 2023, Windows holds 57.37% of the desktop OS market in the US, macOS holds 29.62% and Chrome OS holds 7.47%. Linux holds 2.55%, whereas other miscellaneous desktop operating systems hold 2.97%. Apple really wants to step up the game.
When I google, shows 70% for windows 17 for OSX. That's for March 2023. Not sure where you're getting your made up numbers from.

I will not get into the "8 gb" debate, because I feel like it's been discussed ad nauseam in every other M1/M2 Mac thread. I can only speak from my personal experience with an M1 Mini and M1 Air, both with 8 gb, that this is a lot of performance/$. It's an amazing entry price for anyone considering entering the Mac OS environment, with a system that will smoke all use cases for the average family and even handle photo/video editing (very well, I might add) and even some gaming (if you temper your expectations).
Gaming on a mac, FUNNY. You got jokes.

This is just such a good deal, I don't really understand how apple did it. Fully expected the m2 mac mini to start at $699 and not budge on price but out of the gates it dipped to $500.
Easy. They have an Appletv with 64gb storage, A15 chip, 4gb RAM and remote for $130. For $20 more you get Ethernet and 128gb storage.

I fully expected the price to drop. Smilie
