At $400, Acer Swift, Asus Zenbook at costco. Less durable than tankpads, expect 2-4 good years for high school.
At $200, Certified used Dell Business Refurbish. Old tech old battery ,but great as a spare laptop and for kids in grade school or broke college students. durable like a washing machine. 20-50% slower.
Always get at least i5/r5 cpu, 16gb ram, 256gb-512gb ssd, 1080p IPS, 1 yr warranty
Avoid Intel atom/Pentium, 128gb ssd, emmc, 720p
Avoid the $250 Gateway/Vaio FE/Lenovo Flex/HP those will fall apart after 1 yr of normal use
And the 5 years or less stipulation of the trade-in laptop makes the rebate offer not nearly as good as you think. Most people who have a laptop 5 years or less old will probably value that laptop over $200.

There is a SKU listed - is that just something costco assigned or its specific to the laptop for trade-in?
I think so. It'll definitely last 4-5 years at least. And you can upgrade the storage after purchase, if you need more. A 2 TB NVME M.2 2280 would cost $100-150.

There's 2 versions of the Thinkpad, and 2 of the Asus Vivobook
There's the one in the original post,
the higher thinkpad at 750 with a Ryzen 7 Pro 5850U https://www.costco.com/lenovo-thi...53690.htm
Then's the 2 Vivobooks, one with a Ryzen 5 7520U for 650 as well https://www.costco.com/asus-14%22...51187.h
and the other with Ryzen 7 7730U and a full TB for 850 https://www.costco.com/asus-14%22...51794.h

Should be fine. Ideally would want slightly newer CPU but they would be closer to $800 range.
