If you have the Best Buy credit card, use code APR24EMOB25 for 10% off, $630 isn't too bad.

This one (Z1 Extreme) is the one to get. Don't get me wrong, the base Z1 seems superb compared to Steam Deck's comparable 512GB version, but damn, the Z1 Extreme is hitting 1080p/120fps in games like Forza and 60fps in RDR2, craziness.

Usually the first batch of YouTube reviews would tend to praise a product at launch as those are from privileged reviewers who receive a free unit from the marketing department of a vendor. I'm waiting for real end user reviews to see if I'd get one myself or invest in upgrading the 64GB SSD on my Steam Deck. If the Ally had a touchpad and ran Steam OS it would be closer to a perfect handheld gaming device, though today's battery tech would still cause concerns to some but it's the same issue no matter which device you pick.

Hard to beat the steam deck for efficiency, but the ally has superior raw power. Personally I am waiting for the updated GPD Win Max 2 with the 7840u. It should run windows for better game compatibility, and have around 50% more battery capacity than the steam deck. It also has better expandability with two m.2 ports, 2 SD card ports, more USB ports, and a non proprietary external GPU support. I also appreciate hal joysticks on the GPD. I think the steam deck wins for efficiency from 5-9w then 11watts the ally and win max 2 wins above that. Diminishing returns above 18w. Steam deck is still good, but dated as technology does over time.

90 minute battery life on highest settings and loud fan is a deal breaker IMO. Let this sizzle for a few months. This is going to be like laptop gaming. Unless you're plugged in, disappointed awaits.
I may be an outlier in this bunch, but I almost always have my Deck plugged in when I play, so not really an issue for how I use it.

Only up to 2hrs in gaming battery life. This will hold back the handheld severely. Will have to also pack an external battery.
Sadly all of these portable PC consoles have that battery. Can be more depending on the settings.

It's a dealbreaker for me. The touchpads are underrated, especially for desktop mode and as control options for lots of games where a joystick is too clunky. They are one of the things the deck really got right to add a ton of versatility.
Totally agreed. To my surprise, desktop mode is actually fairly usable with just the Steamdeck controller, and the two trackpads are the reason it works. I tried using the analog sticks in their place and it's not a great experience in comparison. It's not something you'll understand until you've gotten to try it out.

I think Asus is making a mistake not following Valve's lead more closely on that front. You can tell Valve put a ton of thought into their device - the way the right trackpad emulates a trackball instead of a mouse, and the left trackpad has you draw a circle that you "rotate" to scroll. I was surprised at how natural it felt right off the bat. But even then there are endless customization options, so I switched the left trackpad to act more like a scrollwheel which I prefer slightly more than the rotate feature.

I honestly view the trackpads as essential at this point and the lack thereof in the Ally is a dealbreaker for me. I do trust Asus to put together a solid piece of hardware but whether they can reproduce all the little touches that make the Steamdeck so great is yet to be determined.

Man I just spent a ton of money on the steam deck and upgrading it. They really couldn't have announced it sooner? Whatever man I'll just stick with the deck.

The eGPU support is probably the biggest draw for me over the steam deck.

Unfortunately, you are likely incorrect on both accounts. Linus is big enough and the Youtube algorithm works as such to where he is likely to get even MORE money shilling for companies. If Linus was honest, he would have replaced his 1st gen Deck's fan by now and note that only the first generation fans had issues. Instead, he complains non-stop about how his fan isn't quiet so therefore every Steam Deck is loud which is misleading at best. In his latest video, he makes up a silly excuse as to why his team cherry picked the benchmarks. These benchmarks just so happen to show the Ally at its best and are all 2-5 year old titles that aren't really played by anyone anymore (the best is Forza at 9k Steam players + however many play on Game Pass). Where as some of the smaller Youtubers who got review units paint a different tale in their benchmarks. Russ for instance, while not making any direct comparisons, saw FPS numbers 15 to 30% faster in his benches when only taking into account 15W TDPs or higher.

Basically, the Ally is noticeably faster, but not nearly as fast as these mega-influencers are parroting from ASUS. And yes Linus will straight face lie to you, or at best gloss over the bad parts, for views and more money. Who wouldn't in his position? Influencers are entertainers who shill things at their core. Once you are aware of that though, you can just enjoy them for their entertainment value, to which LTT are some of the better entertainers on the platform.

On a side note, but just kinda funny and sad, in an attempt to drum up FOMO, Linus says the Ally will sell out quick. But as of right now, on BestBuy's website, its still very not sold out. I was able to reserve one several hours after release. And honestly, if someone is interested, they should just reserve one and draw their own conclusions since BestBuy's return policy is pretty great (I'm not paid by ASUS to say this I swear).
Agree mostly. Linus protected his integrity but cherry picking and still reserving to change it mind when they do a full review.

When he is honest, it's very transparent. Ally video was NOT one of his truly unbiased one.

He also mentions Asus needs to sell many to make money. If ally sells out for too long, they will lose interest from many gamers. It's only been 1 day but these aren't COVID days anymore. Suspect IF they sell out, it ain't gonna be PS5 waiting. Say what you want $700 is still not cheap in year 2023. Despite inflation, computer prices across the board are plummeting v. Past 2 years.

Lastly, software software software. I don't have a steam deck , but know any quirks Asus may have, will be magnified. On the flip side, having a closed eco system (like apple) is something gamers HATE. However gamers also know Asus software has being GARBAGE, and their years of criminal mobo software without caring, has gone on too long (still is!) and it's finally going to bite them in their rears. Let's not forget their janky and stubborn customer service. I had a top tier z790 mobo that failed in first 3 weeks. They refused a replacement and asked me to send it for repairs - a motherboard!? Simply returned it , and bought a new one.
