If you have the Best Buy credit card, use code APR24EMOB25 for 10% off, $630 isn't too bad.

This one (Z1 Extreme) is the one to get. Don't get me wrong, the base Z1 seems superb compared to Steam Deck's comparable 512GB version, but damn, the Z1 Extreme is hitting 1080p/120fps in games like Forza and 60fps in RDR2, craziness.

Usually the first batch of YouTube reviews would tend to praise a product at launch as those are from privileged reviewers who receive a free unit from the marketing department of a vendor. I'm waiting for real end user reviews to see if I'd get one myself or invest in upgrading the 64GB SSD on my Steam Deck. If the Ally had a touchpad and ran Steam OS it would be closer to a perfect handheld gaming device, though today's battery tech would still cause concerns to some but it's the same issue no matter which device you pick.

Can't wait to see used Steam Decks hitting the market at a reasonable price. Still buying the Ally as it's replacing my media center PC.

People need to relax. Handheld Gaming PC's are still in their infancy. Sure there have been some devices here and there over the last decade (hell, the original Razer Edge came out 10 years ago, who remembers that?) but it's never been like it has been since Valve, GPD, AyaNeo, OXP, AOKZOE, etc all got in the ring the past couple years. Right now we have a whole spectrum of users in this forum from budget-minded single device owners to full blown tech addicts who are consistent Day 1 buyers of everything. After all the benchmarking and testing we've seen today, I think it's pretty clear that the Steam Deck still holds the lead as the 15w champ when it comes to battery life & performance. I think any reasonable person can appreciate that, I know I love my Steam Deck. But the tech addict in me also finds it damn impressive we saw games played at 720p and 1080p going above and beyond 60 frames on a handheld with a 120hz FreeSync Display. That is impressive too. It's easy to understand why that would eat battery life like tic-tacs. There's still a lot to look forward to over the next few years. The ROG will have its faults as does the Deck, but at the end of the day, if someone is happy with their purchase, who cares? I was very skeptical about the xg mobile back when it was first released and Asus has stuck with it and grown the family of devices that can use it. I have an xg 3080 mobile, an x13 laptop, and z13 tablet and I love the portability and ease of use. I can't wait to pick up my Ally and complete the trifecta of xg devices. I still can't believe I'll be able to grab any of the 3 form factors along with a mobile eGPU when I travel. ASUS may have a lot of room to improve their business and customer service practices, but it's ok to acknowledge that, along with the fact that these ideas they brought to fruition are pretty damn cool. But who am I to talk, according to some of the comments Ive seen in here, Im just another moron who likes to throw his money away. Lol

The Steam Deck is great, but there are a lot of games that I have played that will not work on Steam Deck due to Anticheat or System limitations. I have tried using Windows, but it has been far from an ideal experience due to the lack of proper driver support other than the very basic drivers just to work.

ROG Ally would be a consideration, the Steam Deck is fantastic in any game that works with Proton, but anything outside, it becomes a part time job just to make it work.

As for battery life, the Steam deck isn't much better, yes you can try running at lower power but you're going to struggle running any new game at 15 watts max even at the very lowest setting.

meh, ETA Prime shows no real bias I can see in his vids. He reviews EVERYTHING, from budget to high-end, and even puts out vids showing viewers what old tech to buy in order to make a cheap but playable rig for emulation gaming. He's a great source to keep up with what's new and old in gaming hardware and emulation.

It's a dealbreaker for me. The touchpads are underrated, especially for desktop mode and as control options for lots of games where a joystick is too clunky. They are one of the things the deck really got right to add a ton of versatility.
Same here. No touchpad means this is hard for base building or tactic games I like to play.

Does this thing put games to sleep like the steam deck? I've turned the unit off mid game, and come back 3 days later and resumed, no problem. I am not sure if windows can do the same.... it's tempting, but I don't think it's worth it, if I lose the deep sleep function on the deck.

Also, cant the deck already play gamepass and ps5 now games? I thought it could
No, you can't put it to sleep like in Deck and come back later to resume the game and pick up where you left off, that simply is not possible in Windows-based machines for games. It has been clarified in over 20 articles as of today that's something steam deck owners are going to miss in Ally Z1.

Unfortunately, you are likely incorrect on both accounts. Linus is big enough and the Youtube algorithm works as such to where he is likely to get even MORE money shilling for companies. If Linus was honest, he would have replaced his 1st gen Deck's fan by now and note that only the first generation fans had issues. Instead, he complains non-stop about how his fan isn't quiet so therefore every Steam Deck is loud which is misleading at best. In his latest video, he makes up a silly excuse as to why his team cherry picked the benchmarks. These benchmarks just so happen to show the Ally at its best and are all 2-5 year old titles that aren't really played by anyone anymore (the best is Forza at 9k Steam players + however many play on Game Pass). Where as some of the smaller Youtubers who got review units paint a different tale in their benchmarks. Russ for instance, while not making any direct comparisons, saw FPS numbers 15 to 30% faster in his benches when only taking into account 15W TDPs or higher.

Basically, the Ally is noticeably faster, but not nearly as fast as these mega-influencers are parroting from ASUS. And yes Linus will straight face lie to you, or at best gloss over the bad parts, for views and more money. Who wouldn't in his position? Influencers are entertainers who shill things at their core. Once you are aware of that though, you can just enjoy them for their entertainment value, to which LTT are some of the better entertainers on the platform.

On a side note, but just kinda funny and sad, in an attempt to drum up FOMO, Linus says the Ally will sell out quick. But as of right now, on BestBuy's website, its still very not sold out. I was able to reserve one several hours after release. And honestly, if someone is interested, they should just reserve one and draw their own conclusions since BestBuy's return policy is pretty great (I'm not paid by ASUS to say this I swear).
Why I'm waiting for phawx and Taki. They are always upfront on issues

Why are the review pictures of grown men playing 2 inch screens inside houses? 2 year olds already got their rich families buying them $700 devices to post links to their only fans on Facebook. Why not just market these to the people they are for?

10% off and $50 saved in reward certificates, so I'll take my chances. I've been thinking of getting a handheld since the steam deck was announced.

90 minute battery life on highest settings and loud fan is a deal breaker IMO. Let this sizzle for a few months. This is going to be like laptop gaming. Unless you're plugged in, disappointed awaits.

I have steam deck running windows 11 and have 2tb nvme on it, able to run almost all triple AAA titles on with mid-low custom settings average 30 to 40 fps. With 3-4 hours of battery life. If play retro emulatorgl games, would last over 6 hours plus. I wouldn't buy this thing even those it has more powerful CPU with better igpu, cause battery life is half of the steam deck. To me playing portable game machine with poor battery life just sucks.
