If you have the Best Buy credit card, use code APR24EMOB25 for 10% off, $630 isn't too bad.

This one (Z1 Extreme) is the one to get. Don't get me wrong, the base Z1 seems superb compared to Steam Deck's comparable 512GB version, but damn, the Z1 Extreme is hitting 1080p/120fps in games like Forza and 60fps in RDR2, craziness.

Usually the first batch of YouTube reviews would tend to praise a product at launch as those are from privileged reviewers who receive a free unit from the marketing department of a vendor. I'm waiting for real end user reviews to see if I'd get one myself or invest in upgrading the 64GB SSD on my Steam Deck. If the Ally had a touchpad and ran Steam OS it would be closer to a perfect handheld gaming device, though today's battery tech would still cause concerns to some but it's the same issue no matter which device you pick.

Does this thing put games to sleep like the steam deck? I've turned the unit off mid game, and come back 3 days later and resumed, no problem. I am not sure if windows can do the same.... it's tempting, but I don't think it's worth it, if I lose the deep sleep function on the deck.

Also, cant the deck already play gamepass and ps5 now games? I thought it could

ETA prime clearly showed it doing both things in his review.

Only reason I'm passing is the fact that they excluded USB4 for their overpriced proprietary eGPU solution
This is 100% only reason I didn't buy one. If they had USB4 or at the least Thunderbolt 3 I'd be in

I highly doubt you'll have the same experience. I have a GPD win3 which runs windows 10. I completely disabled hibernate because any game that was running would be locked up when it woke up. Sleep does work but still drains the battery much more than the steam deck in sleep mode. Also, the wake up is nowhere near as instantaneous as the steam deck.

Is it possible to install games on it that we install on Windows (pirated ones) or is it only able to play games from official stores like Steam, epic etc?

Same here. With one USB port it would have to be thunderbolt or USB 4 at a minimum.

Maybe I should sell my SD? 512GB model, hardly used since I thought it plays PUBG but it doesn't. Anyone around Seattle want to buy it?

(and hence I was asking if this ROG Ally plays PUBG)

I'm not trying to dissuade anyone

However keep in mind

This is a preorder, units are not widespread and outside of a couple select outlets people have not been able to review or preview this. Those reviews may have numerous stipulations on them or review by Asus before release.

Windows has historically been difficult to use and navigate on small and portable devices

There have been reports about Asus' dropping the ball on quality control, and customer service.

Just remember that this is a preorder, there is no guarantee that your experience will be good, save your receipt

Reviews from people that test it for more than a couple days, and are incentivized to give positive reviews because thats the only way they get early access to products.

Asus AM5 motherboards got tons of glowing reviews by reviewers when they launched late last year, and now everybody hates them now that they found out they are contributing to AMD CPUs burning up and failing. Similarly the 7900 XTX had positive reviews before launch by reviewers, and once units actually shipped to consumers people found out the cold plates were defective and a ton of units were overheating badly.

'its basically a mini PC with a screen attached', which means there are hundreds of things that could fail or be defective... Nintendo who has been making video game systems for decades couldn't even produce working controllers for the Switch. This is Asus' first attempt at a product like this.. You can be the beta tester of it. I will gladly wait a few weeks to see how it actually turns out.
If thats the case i dont think u should be here. Its for preorders. If by ur logic u should wait when they have their second or third hand held. Or wait a year after and look for reviews that specifically reviews after a year of person use. Sheesh.
Electronics are never perfect thats why there is warranty. Asus can build a simple board with an apu on it... they been in the game for long enough... show yourself out and dont buy anything ever again lol. Geez people these days.

Maybe a funny question but could one play MS Flight simulator X on this?
Easily. I played mfs on a much older handheld no problem.

Depends on what qualifies as "nicer". Windows has native DirectX and OS libraries for better game compatibility, but at the cost of battery life, heat, and weight. Windows is an inefficient hog, there's no debating that. This ROG is a brute-force way to get closer to native Windows gaming. Fine for a desktop, questionable for a battery powered portable device.

Linux always beats Windows on code efficiency. SteamOS has continued improving its game compatibility. But I get that people run out of patience waiting to play their favorite Windows games.
There are only a handful of games that actually play better on steamOS than windows... The vast majority run equal or better on windows. I don't disagree with your characterization of windows but these games are just developed for windows. At least that has been my experience with the two OS's. Although I can guarantee I will set up a dual boot to test out halo ISO or an eventual steam Os for non steam decks.

You can install anything you would install on any other windows based PC. So yeah, set sail!

For those ditching the deck for this, will you miss the touchpads? I don't own the deck but wonder how much of a loss that is for the ally if any.
It's a dealbreaker for me. The touchpads are underrated, especially for desktop mode and as control options for lots of games where a joystick is too clunky. They are one of the things the deck really got right to add a ton of versatility.

Linus gave it glowing reviews. What do you think is more likely? His channel is too small so he needs to kiss Asus butt or his channel is big enough that he would likely lose more money and views by not being honest?
Unfortunately, you are likely incorrect on both accounts. Linus is big enough and the Youtube algorithm works as such to where he is likely to get even MORE money shilling for companies. If Linus was honest, he would have replaced his 1st gen Deck's fan by now and note that only the first generation fans had issues. Instead, he complains non-stop about how his fan isn't quiet so therefore every Steam Deck is loud which is misleading at best. In his latest video, he makes up a silly excuse as to why his team cherry picked the benchmarks. These benchmarks just so happen to show the Ally at its best and are all 2-5 year old titles that aren't really played by anyone anymore (the best is Forza at 9k Steam players + however many play on Game Pass). Where as some of the smaller Youtubers who got review units paint a different tale in their benchmarks. Russ for instance, while not making any direct comparisons, saw FPS numbers 15 to 30% faster in his benches when only taking into account 15W TDPs or higher.

Basically, the Ally is noticeably faster, but not nearly as fast as these mega-influencers are parroting from ASUS. And yes Linus will straight face lie to you, or at best gloss over the bad parts, for views and more money. Who wouldn't in his position? Influencers are entertainers who shill things at their core. Once you are aware of that though, you can just enjoy them for their entertainment value, to which LTT are some of the better entertainers on the platform.

On a side note, but just kinda funny and sad, in an attempt to drum up FOMO, Linus says the Ally will sell out quick. But as of right now, on BestBuy's website, its still very not sold out. I was able to reserve one several hours after release. And honestly, if someone is interested, they should just reserve one and draw their own conclusions since BestBuy's return policy is pretty great (I'm not paid by ASUS to say this I swear).

I would take everything ETA Prime says with a grain of salt. All his beelink reviews don't line up with my experiences and other reviews.

The proprietary port is interesting and at least already technically has options available. I wonder if people will homebrew their own epgu enclosures
