You can just get a Minisforum mini PC for $579 (now $506 - see below). Comes with the latest AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS, 32GB DDR5, 1TB NVMe 4.0 SSD, Triple 4K display out, a ton of USB ports, including a USB4 port. It even comes with a Windows 11 Pro license.

Unless you really need a Mac, I'd go with the above. Much better machine for almost the same price. You can the same specs from other manufacturers for even less, but Minisforum is a well known brand in the mini PC scene.

Edit: As another user kindly pointed out, the Minisforum PC I listed above is just $506 with coupon now. absolutely insane deal for so much power in such a small package.

Same price at Costco so a slightly better deal if you have membership since they extend the warranty for an extra year.

I got one of these (8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) a few months ago when it was the same price , and I've loved it. It's extremely quick, and I've had no issue whatsoever with RAM, programs loading and running, etc. Granted, I'm not doing any heavy gaming, video editing, music creation, etc., but for basic needs, this is more than capable. I was worried about the principal of just 8GB ram (my old 2012 Mini has the same amount), but this machine just operates differently.

I had an Amazon GC and already have a monitor, so at that price, this was a really great purchase for my needs.

8GB of RAM is going to choke basic web browsing with multiple tabs and one more open application. Phones ship with 12GB+ nowadays and multitasking there is much more rare than on a desktop with a large display
Choke. Really? Choke huh? This doesn't run windows and carry 30 years of services code for backwards compatibility, like WNS and NTLM along with MS bloat.

I've had soo many tabs open on my m1 mba I didn't know which tab was what after a while.

Seriously considering buying one to tinker around with but I have no idea what else I would use it for.

8GB RAM is not a lot and online reviews suggest the 256GB storage is much slower than the 512GB.
if you don't know what you'd use it for, you're unlikely to notice the slower storage outside benchmarks.

Too bad Macs are designed not be to upgraded or repaired. Something like this would work well for my wife if I could quadruple the RAM and quadruple the storage for $100-200.
No idea why people would thumbs down this comment, lol. Everything should be upgradable and repairable these days. Just common sense.

Well...they made a Mac Pro if your wife is truly a professional.

This is for consumers, and it does a great job for consumers. If your wife is using your devices for work or beyond normal academia purposes, such a product like this is not meant for your wife.

Not knowing what your wife does for a living/pleasure, I can only comment with this: a large percentage of users have zero issues with this base model. It is however, a BASE model. Powerful, but still a base. Just like you shouldn't skimp on good socks if you're an outdoors person, you shouldn't skimp on a good device if it's your job and livelihood to work on it. You feel me?

Uh. For $500, I don't think the targeted audience will care about large file load times.

Highly amused by the typical comments.

It's $500!

Using this as a Plex machine and have no issues playing a 4K movie stream. Could probably run more than one at once too since the CPU never goes higher than 10%. It was really overkill but I like being able to set and forget it.

Just an FYI for anyone else thinking of using it the same way.

Lol. Yes. Funny everyone thinks everybody needs killer video editing performance and 7000MBytes/second disk transfer speed when they might be coming from 500MBytes/second SSD systems that are never short on I/O speed. Hah

Another silly comment without any real experience using such a machine.

What kind wattage do these AMD chips pull? One of the best things about Apple silicone is the power consumption thats saved monthly. The mac mini runs idle at 7 watts.

Can't say about this specific machine because I have not used it, but an Intel NUC 8th gen i5 idles at around 10W in my own measurement. The 7735HS likely has a higher power consumption, but you can choose a model that has a CPU with a lower TDP. However I would not worry about it at all -- it is a matter of 10W or 20W, and barely makes any difference in your electricity use, especially if you only use it a few hours a day. Setting a shorter screen timeout probably has much more significance than figuring out the power efficiency of these chips.
