You can just get a Minisforum mini PC for $579 (now $506 - see below). Comes with the latest AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS, 32GB DDR5, 1TB NVMe 4.0 SSD, Triple 4K display out, a ton of USB ports, including a USB4 port. It even comes with a Windows 11 Pro license.

Unless you really need a Mac, I'd go with the above. Much better machine for almost the same price. You can the same specs from other manufacturers for even less, but Minisforum is a well known brand in the mini PC scene.

Edit: As another user kindly pointed out, the Minisforum PC I listed above is just $506 with coupon now. absolutely insane deal for so much power in such a small package.

Same price at Costco so a slightly better deal if you have membership since they extend the warranty for an extra year.

Yah, I kind of like Dell 7200 2-in-1 as it is fully detachable. It's just around $280 shipped. It's expensive considering the 7390 or 7400 series but it's smaller and more portable.

Funny I never liked using an iPad even with a keyboard as I used my Pro Max phone most of the time and iPad is too limited for me as I would just prefer a laptop

Now with 7200 2-in-1 I can do a lot and it's under 1.87lbs (0.8 less than M2 Air) so I may make this my casual carry if I can live with it. I won't even bring the keyboard, the onscreen keyboard with Windows 11 OS is plenty enough for an hour of use here and there.

I like a laptop because I do need to use Chrome with various extensions so only a macos or windows will work as ipad/iphone chrome does not support extensions.

battery life sucks at just 3 hours for some reason even at 100% charged (85% original battery capacity).

as for heat, it's fine in the heat. When I use it it will be cooled down pretty quick in AC somewhere anyway. I don't think computers cares to be in the heat these days since internals can get 140 degrees easily.

Not gonna lie I've been browsing refurb and giving people some ideas for Kid's gifts as $100-$200 for a quad core 1080p computer is just great. They may think it's "old" to buy but they'll love it when they realize it's powerful enough for their mindcraft , discord and homework needs.
never used a 2-in-1 but i like the dell latitude series of laptops; the latitudes i use are over $1000 new, so are well built. this would be ideal for family use as i have worked on consumer grade laptops and found them wanting. the latitudes here on SD usually are Business grade and Mil Spec, they also should be graded Kid Spec as this will be a more durable machine for kids that probably don't understand how to care for anything of value. my family also uses a laptop case for transporting which seem to increase the durability for daily use.

battery life for regular latitudes seems to be above 3 hours, although we all seem to just plug them in.

in the past i have used pc from the Fruit company with excellent results but upgrading them seems to be more of a problem so i have switched over to windows instead of filling the land fills with excess techno junk. soldering components seems to be the biggest reason to avoid the Fruity machines

Edit, still looking for a Slick Deal on Fruit machines, but 100 buks off doesn't cut it when Dell is offering 50% off most weeks over here on refurbs. my recourse is probably looking at Antique Fruits with very little upgrade possibilities. not very attractive. No1:no1

Amen. 8GB RAM in 2023 is ludicrous.

I never used 2-in-1 either as I thought they were always stupid. Now I am just curious if I can make a new workflow out of it (non-work related first).

More for fun and curiousity. I still have fruit company as my primary computing device. if I can have iMessages fully integrated (Phone Link sucks bad) and have some of the nice ecosystem stuff like Time Machine etc etc etc without having to get extra software then I could consider Windows main computer one day. I need iMessages as part of my primary communication app that I use constantly along with stuff like Discord/Telegram.

As for kids, yes, I like the dell harder shell and could last longer although I give ipads first as they are easier them to master and then I used keyboard to them then eventually they will graduate to a macos or windows machine. Linux may be safest option for browsing purposes and not have to worry about malware "as much".

One thing I DO LOVE is Windows Hello and proximity detection. That is something macOS does not have and long time coming....

I found this hard to believe. Would you mind posting a screenshot of your RAM usage? Is the memory pressure green or yellow? I had a base M1 Air that I returned. It started using swap memory with ~20 Chrome tabs open and wrote 60-70GB to SSD per day doing basic tasks like web browsing. While 8GB RAM provides satisfactory performance, it comes at the expense of SSD longevity.
Show us your screenshot and the websites you're loading clearly so I'll duplicate best I can.

Looks interesting as a project but no way I am setting up a server and rely on AppleScript for all of my messages Smilie

I also don't want to keep looking at my phone to see if something was missed in the relay! That would suck Stick Out Tongue

Bought this model earlier this month directly at Apple Education Store. Same price, but Apple gift cards can be bought at discount through credit card promotions, such as Amex/Discover on Amazon, and Chase offers for BestBuy.

8GB is pretty enough for most people, IMHO. I was using 2017 MacBook Pro with i7 and 16GB ram. Due to the DPI scaling issue, hooking two 4k monitors with 1440p scaling can't handle even a Zoom call (the system becomes unresponsive and extremely high in utilization). After switching to this M2 Mac Mini, it runs so smoothly and quietly with daily work/entertainment needs (Chrome browsers with 10 - 20 tabs, and some PDF/Word/coding IDE, plus games or video editing). MacOS did pretty well with memory swap, inactive application would be 'hibernated' to save memory.

Why people buy Mac and continue using chrome browser? I have only iPhone and Safari is the best mobile browser. I don't have access to macOS safari but I think it is better than chrome in utilize resources.

How is the build quality. It looks like plastic. Is this mini pc fairly reliable.

Not sure since I don't own it, but plastic doesn't mean bad build quality. Also, for a computer that will sit on your desk all day and not get banged up in a laptop bag, I wouldn't worry to much about getting something with the ultimate build quality. Having said that, I have only heard good things about Minisforum mini PCs, so I am assuming the build quality is decent.

I know it. I tried to move my wife off Mac a while ago and she just won't have it. All she does is Adobe programs and web-surfing, but she doesn't want to give up her Apple key shortcuts or learn a new OS, even if it would save $1000 on her next computer.
I pretty much only use Adobe as well and just can't justify going to Windows from Mac. I used to have to have both for clients (before Adobe went cross platform) but would have to update the Windows side every year or so while my Macs were steady. I'm still using a 2013 Mac Pro every day. In about a year I'll have to upgrade it since it just missed the cut on the new OS. With Windows, it seemed like half my pheripherials or my computer had to be replaced with every OS update.

One thing you can do is move to Edge. It runs off Chromium, but MS has done a good job of making it more efficient than Chrome. It also uses the same extensions, so the experience is super familiar.
I don't think Edge has multiple profile support. Ie: maybe I am the one that does it but I have multiple gmail accts. Each is a profile with different bookmarks and extensions. I can open all of them in separate chrome browser each with their own tabs simultaneously and run "3-4" browser profiles at once. That's a key thing why I still stay with chrome. Tried other ones like Brave etc just doesn't cut it even though brave has the extensions also.
