Unless you really need a Mac, I'd go with the above. Much better machine for almost the same price. You can the same specs from other manufacturers for even less, but Minisforum is a well known brand in the mini PC scene.

Edit: As another user kindly pointed out, the Minisforum PC I listed above is just $506 with coupon now. absolutely insane deal for so much power in such a small package.

Funny I never liked using an iPad even with a keyboard as I used my Pro Max phone most of the time and iPad is too limited for me as I would just prefer a laptop
Now with 7200 2-in-1 I can do a lot and it's under 1.87lbs (0.8 less than M2 Air) so I may make this my casual carry if I can live with it. I won't even bring the keyboard, the onscreen keyboard with Windows 11 OS is plenty enough for an hour of use here and there.
I like a laptop because I do need to use Chrome with various extensions so only a macos or windows will work as ipad/iphone chrome does not support extensions.
battery life sucks at just 3 hours for some reason even at 100% charged (85% original battery capacity).
as for heat, it's fine in the heat. When I use it it will be cooled down pretty quick in AC somewhere anyway. I don't think computers cares to be in the heat these days since internals can get 140 degrees easily.
Not gonna lie I've been browsing refurb and giving people some ideas for Kid's gifts as $100-$200 for a quad core 1080p computer is just great. They may think it's "old" to buy but they'll love it when they realize it's powerful enough for their mindcraft , discord and homework needs.
battery life for regular latitudes seems to be above 3 hours, although we all seem to just plug them in.
in the past i have used pc from the Fruit company with excellent results but upgrading them seems to be more of a problem so i have switched over to windows instead of filling the land fills with excess techno junk. soldering components seems to be the biggest reason to avoid the Fruity machines
Edit, still looking for a Slick Deal on Fruit machines, but 100 buks off doesn't cut it when Dell is offering 50% off most weeks over here on refurbs. my recourse is probably looking at Antique Fruits with very little upgrade possibilities. not very attractive.

More for fun and curiousity. I still have fruit company as my primary computing device. if I can have iMessages fully integrated (Phone Link sucks bad) and have some of the nice ecosystem stuff like Time Machine etc etc etc without having to get extra software then I could consider Windows main computer one day. I need iMessages as part of my primary communication app that I use constantly along with stuff like Discord/Telegram.
As for kids, yes, I like the dell harder shell and could last longer although I give ipads first as they are easier them to master and then I used keyboard to them then eventually they will graduate to a macos or windows machine. Linux may be safest option for browsing purposes and not have to worry about malware "as much".
One thing I DO LOVE is Windows Hello and proximity detection. That is something macOS does not have and long time coming....

I also don't want to keep looking at my phone to see if something was missed in the relay! That would suck
8GB is pretty enough for most people, IMHO. I was using 2017 MacBook Pro with i7 and 16GB ram. Due to the DPI scaling issue, hooking two 4k monitors with 1440p scaling can't handle even a Zoom call (the system becomes unresponsive and extremely high in utilization). After switching to this M2 Mac Mini, it runs so smoothly and quietly with daily work/entertainment needs (Chrome browsers with 10 - 20 tabs, and some PDF/Word/coding IDE, plus games or video editing). MacOS did pretty well with memory swap, inactive application would be 'hibernated' to save memory.
