Both the 980 Pro and 990 Pro had a bugged firmware that was killing them within a few months. They were incorrectly reading the wear on the drives. After a certain amount of wear, the drives become permanently read-only with no way to fix it. Even though the drives had 95%+ life left in them, they were reading as about to die and rendered read-only. That since has been fixed. As long as you update the firmware before that happens, they're fine. I'd be incredibly surprised if there are any drives left with this old firmware (at least directly from Samsung), as I bought one around December and it had a newer firmware than the defective version. The fixed firmware for the 990 Pro wasn't released until a couple months after the 980 Pro fix, so people were advising to avoid the 990 Pro until it was fixed. The 990 Pro firmware was fixed in February.
That was a waste of nearly an hour.

I had it in my cart with the price and as I went to checkout, it reverted to the higher price.

Then I tried multiple ways, no change. Then I went into a chat with VIJAY and he sent me an invalid code to supposedly fix it - nope.

Then we went back and forth with multiple screenshots in support that I was not receiving the Military discount and he then started to claim our tax rates were the issue and that they are almost three time what they actually are....

Finally, I just gave up.

But I'll probably try again later after I've cooled down
Worked for me. I don't even know why I ordered one. Prices should go even lower.

Nice find.

FYI, I used the First Responders one because it doesn't require verification and it still worked and brought it $116.99

I personally like Firecuda530 but I tend t go for best $value deal.

Best value are those solidigm 440 pros for 119. These are good too, same with the wd 850xs.

5000MB/s write isn't gold standard that's mid gen 4 speeds for $119.99 i would get P44 PRO is on par with 990 Pro according to tomshardware review.

how did you do this? Doesnt work for me at all. Always requires verification through id.me which is terrible.

Samsung 980 Pro is near the middle of the Gen 4 pack in speed. However, it is the best in power management test, so it will use less power and run cooler. Users won't need to worry about heatsink or speed throttling, so it is better for laptops. In addition, it supports AES in HW, so it is better for works which require drive encryption. Applause

WD 850x is one the the fastest SSDs recommended by many review websites. However, it may run hotter, so please buy the models which include a heatsink or add a heatsink yourself. The heatsink will not fit in most of the laptops, so it is better for desktop gaming PCs or external gaming console expansions. Peace

Should I send back my one week old unopened $73 670p 2 TB back for this since it's 38% more money for more than 100% speed, PCIe 4.0 instead of PCIe 3.0 TLC instead of QLC?

Not sure something can be a gold standard if it was plagued with such a big issue..

If you care about your data just go with WD. Samsung clearly does not have a competent QA team to allow a bug that severe get through into the firmware.
