Since some people have mentioned the need for updating firmware ….can someone suggest the best steps and/or utilities to update the firmware and clone an existing nvme boot drive to this new one ? Is it okay that the existing boot drive is only 512gb or so? Thanks for any pointers.
1) The firmware update is necessary (see here [pcgamer.com]) but painless. Download Samsung Magician. There will be an option to update firmware in the software. Takes a few minutes at most.

Edit: Since I'm getting criticism for "misinformation" I should add that since the problem was discovered in Jan/Feb 2023, it's likely Samsung has already loaded its new stock with the latest firmware that shouldn't require updating, but it doesn't hurt to check to see if you might need a firmware update, especially if you happen to receive older stock. The manufacture date should be listed on the box (see below) but regardless of the manufacture date it's best to be proactive and check your firmware. It just takes a minute or two.

Attachment 13835252

2) For cloning, I highly recommend Macrium Reflect. It's free and can clone your current 512gb drive to your new 2tb drive (use a USB enclosure like this one [amazon.com]) even though the sizes are different. It makes the upgrade/transition seamless and painless. Just clone your drive and pop the new drive in. No need to reinstall Windows and start over from scratch. And with the enclosure you can still make use of your old drive as an external drive.

Unfortunately I don't believe so as the drive likely won't be recognized as Samsung when it's in an external enclosure. IIRC it just shows up as a drive from [enclosure brand]. You'll probably need to install it directly into an M.2 slot before you can upgrade the firmware.

Lol. Are you going to post this on all SSD threads?

Hold the line until when? People keep saying this without saying when we should pull the trigger.

Thanks!! Repped.

Nice, edu discount works with any Samsung account it seems. Plus cashback. A little bit over $90 after taxes and cashback. Good deal for me.

It's $99 + tax for me as well (with EDU). I did see this message about the edu discount. "Education discount Limit exceeded for following Items 980 PRO PCIe 4.0 NVMe™ SSD 2TB"
The discount was $80 off $179.99
