1) The firmware update is necessary (see here [pcgamer.com]) but painless. Download Samsung Magician. There will be an option to update firmware in the software. Takes a few minutes at most.

Edit: Since I'm getting criticism for "misinformation" I should add that since the problem was discovered in Jan/Feb 2023, it's likely Samsung has already loaded its new stock with the latest firmware that shouldn't require updating, but it doesn't hurt to check to see if you might need a firmware update, especially if you happen to receive older stock. The manufacture date should be listed on the box (see below) but regardless of the manufacture date it's best to be proactive and check your firmware. It just takes a minute or two.

2) For cloning, I highly recommend Macrium Reflect. It's free and can clone your current 512gb drive to your new 2tb drive (use a USB enclosure like this one [amazon.com]) even though the sizes are different. It makes the upgrade/transition seamless and painless. Just clone your drive and pop the new drive in. No need to reinstall Windows and start over from scratch. And with the enclosure you can still make use of your old drive as an external drive.

Deal still works, you need to add to cart to see the final price $98.52 with tax. I also paid with PayPal because I had a deal for 2% back shopping at samsung.

Is it the Acasis TBU 401 by any chance? OR 405? How's the speeds?
Yes, it's the TBU401E. Speeds are as expected. Disk Speed Test on my MacBook Pro shows:
2,790 MB/s write
2,751 MB/s read

I too chose the shipping option in case there's a lower price on Prime Day deals.

Sweeet! I'm guessing that's about the best speeds you can get for an external SSD at any price. Good job Smilie

Good info, but technically, they've known about this issue for well over a year now. The article you referenced is well out of date. The firmware update they mentioned was released in early 2022. There was one firmware from late 2021 that also fixed the issue, but is no longer recommended. So anyone getting new stock from this year should absolutely be running the newest firmware.

I just checked my 2TB 980 Pro and the latest firmware is 5B2QGXA7. I got the drive 7-8 months ago (in 2022) and it didn't need new firmware. If your firmware begins with a "3" (three) then you need to do it....
This, and if it begins with a 4, you're also supposedly safe, but should still update to the 5 version.

The drives I picked up from Best Buy all have 03/04 2023 date codes. Samsung has been patching these out for more than a year now, so the date code is the thing to really watch out for. If I got one new in store from 2021, I'd be returning it just because Smilie

Dang nabbit, looks to be dead. $116.99 now. I was trying to checkout earlier but the kiddos were losing their mind. Finally got a chance to circle back around and no dice.

I cannot speak for others or Samsung but it makes sense to me to use the latest firmware on recently produced SSDs. Especially if the older version(s) had massive issues.

Anyone buying this to use in their PCI-E Gen3 system?
It will work, but I decided to not purchase as it may run a little hot in a laptop that is small. I have purchased a 990 that I will use in my next build and supposedly it runs a little cooler. I have a WD SN770 in one of the slickdeals ACER refurbs (small case) and I am surprised how cool it is running - down to 23C with no heatsink. I was worried about it overheating the board.

But in general Samsung has been a reliable brand, although I just had an 860 SATA drive go bad. My understanding is that the Gen 3 requires less power and generates less heat. You do not see a significant boost in processing speeds due to the Gen 3 limitations, but with this being Gen 4, you have a stick that is more future proof. For me, I decided that if I needed a bigger drive and memory/ssd prices coming down, I will review my needs once I determine I need a replacement and see what is needed. With a laptop, it is possible that what I have in the machine will last until I need to replace it. With depreciation, the $100 might represent a 25% investment into the machine.

It actually is printed on the sticker on the side of the box (security sticker)... so you'll known if it's an old unit before you even leave the store. It might be on the unit itself as stated by another, will have to check later.
