O man yeah I just love buying spyware boxes from China and Russia! Any no name android box is a big no no you should watch the LTT video on what's hiding in those things.
Same. Really all this as going for it is at this point is good AI upscaling and plex support (codecs etc) if you need neither, the Apple TV is much better hardware.
This should really be around $120 at this point.

There are alternatives that are actually superior to Shield in almost every way now. For example, the Homatics Box R 4k Plus / Dune HD / Nokia 8010 / RockTek G2 devices.

There are two USB ports on my router, but the router is not close to the Shield/TV. I constantly hear all this hype about Plex, but it seems complicated to use. Will Apple TV via Plex play Dolby True-HD and DTS-HD audio? I hear a lot about transcoding with Plex. Could that possibly lower the picture quality? I often need to rewind or fast forward or jump ahead to a certain point in a video file. It seems like this could be a problem when having to do all this wirelessly. If I am using the wi-fi on the router to stream the files to the Apple TV using Plex, won't that tie up some of the wi-fi bandwidth? What if I want to download some large file on my laptop over wi-fi at the same time I am using Plex?

Also, occasionally I take my Shield on the road, and need to play media files via the USB port from a flash drive or HDD. There is no router with USB ports to plug into in a hotel room for example, or this is not feasible at other people's houses.

So you see, it is very useful to have USB ports on the Shield, using Kodi for playback. I don't have to have a noisy or power-hungry desktop powered up, or buy a NAS or what have you. I just plug in my drives (external or thumb) to the Shield, and fire up Kodi and there is no stuttering. Everything plays, and I can skip forwards and backwards without any issues with lip-sync or subtitles (I use subtitles very frequently).

If Apple wants my business, they can jolly well put some USB ports on their box.
Your shield doesn't need to be close to your router. You plug your drives into the router to access them via apps on your media player, like an Apple TV. They should play uncompressed. All my blu ray rips are copied straight from the discs. No compression. As long as your media player can play the file type and your connection is fast enough, there's no need for transcoding. Even so, I don't think you can "see" any visual effects from transcoding.

I have an older (10 year old?) tp link router. I have no trouble playing all my uncompressed blu ray rips using plex on my Apple TV's. Believe me, I'm no genius. Plex isn't complicated. There are lots of tutorials on how to get started.

Do the TV's you run into in hotels and friend's houses have usb ports. Many do these days.
As one other poster pointed out, we have no issues playing blu ray rips with the drive plugged straight into the tv.
You can also access all your media from plex while on the road by buying the "plex pass". It will be compressed, but that is the small price for a lot of convenience of not having to carry gear around.

I think Apple has plenty of business already (like 3 TRILLION dollars worth) to be concerned for a small niche market of consumers. But I really think with all the other options, not having a usb port on a media player has become an antiquated gripe.

Have a NAS, and use Google tv to stream. What does this thing do that Plex on Google or Samsung can't?

The upscaling didn't look any better with Shield so returned it.

Don't understand it's use if you have a NAS. And or $200, just get a NAS isntead.
Do you have any suggestions for a NAS, especially for a beginner? I have been looking at those and this shield.

Been using Synology for years and still love it. It just works. Costs a bit more but well worth it to me. Bigger is always better, even if you don't use the slots for a while.

Uniformed people still buying doesn't negate it's age.
As someone who tries to stay informed, this device stil solves an issue that most devices cannot offer. I did buy a Fire TV Cube to test against as well, and while I'm hoping it'll work, I'm still doubting it'll do it correctly.

A difference doesn't make it better. I use calibrated monitors, tvs, and projectors. I know what HDR effects are and have produced content for over 20 years. Spotting a difference isn't the issue at all...it's the practical benefit that simply doesn't offer much value as marketing departments want you to believe.
Did you calibrate them for HDR?... If you're leaving it at the general 150 nits used for sRGB then yeah, you're not going to be seeing much difference in HDR.

HDR has very different gamma and color targets.

If we're talking higher end miniLED and OLED, you'll need a different calibrator too.

You may want to first understand how more brightness doesn't translate to a better image...it's finding the balance between contrast and brightness. Watching nuked images with unrealistic looking scenes with unnatural brightness levels is just being sheep to demo modes. You're misconstruing my original points or just don't want to accept an unpopular opinion based on facts, experience, & science, so just move along.
Part of the whole argument people are presenting for the shield is its support for HDR10+ and Dolby Vision... which allow for precisely controlled brightness levels as dictated by the creative team... so in that they're more faithful to the director's envisioned ideal than regular HDR and non-HDR content, when done correctly.

While they're proprietary and messy, which sucks, they are absolutely beautiful to view on a good encode and TV.

But then the Apple TV has to be hard wired to ethernet, right? The router has to forward the files to the media player somehow or another.

Wired or wireless. All depends on how fast your home network is. Some people's wifi is faster than ethernet. Just research your router and how it handles its usb ports with external drives. Should be usb3.0.

I have used Unraid forever and really like it. I'm using an extremely cheap computer setup running it that my shields pull media from.

So I bought both a Fire Cube TV 3rd gen + nVidia shield, and I haven't even installed the Shield yet but right now the FireTV is super fast and runs all my plex content without any issues. Its been amazing and does all the stuff I wanted in PLEX, that the built in TV App and Xbox app could not do. Its super fast and does PGS subs really well too.

The PLEX app on the FireCube seems much more up to date than the ones on other platforms.
