O man yeah I just love buying spyware boxes from China and Russia! Any no name android box is a big no no you should watch the LTT video on what's hiding in those things.
Same. Really all this as going for it is at this point is good AI upscaling and plex support (codecs etc) if you need neither, the Apple TV is much better hardware.
This should really be around $120 at this point.

There are alternatives that are actually superior to Shield in almost every way now. For example, the Homatics Box R 4k Plus / Dune HD / Nokia 8010 / RockTek G2 devices.

Don't need a NAS:
$170 on sale - Shield Pro with Plex Server running on it.
$130 on sale Costco - Seagate 8TB External HD (265 MKV movies with lossless audio at 25-40GB avg size) hook up to Shield Pro. Add another drive if needed...Shield pro has 2 USBs.
$130 - External Asus Bluray Libredrive enabled drive to rip.
Around $330 to have an excellent lossless home streamer and still less expensive than both a NAS and Kaleidescape.
So your server is also your streamer/client? Same box? How do you watch it in other rooms?

Only Nvidia Shield Pro supports lossless, which makes it the better option over Apple TV for audiophiles and anyone who uses the Shield pro as a plex server for true lossless playback of film audio tracks.
The newest FireTV Cube 3rd gen can do lossless including Dolby Atmos. Just ran a Atmos test file through Plex this past weekend testing stuff out.

I have both the newest FireTV Cube and Apple TV 4k. The Apple is hands down a nicer and faster interface then both FireTV and Shield but can't do the passthrough which is why it's on the basement TV now and the Cube is on the primary TV. I WISH apple would allow passthrough and I could get rid of the Amazon ads but it is what it is.

If nVidia updated their hardware I'd bite but other then the advertising the Cube has it beat these days for streaming.

There is temp root for the 3rd gen Cube, you can use a custom launcher, and never have to see the Amazon home page

Thanks, I'll check it out. That's my biggest complaint but we do like some features like the photo slideshow and stuff. We use Plex with a HDHomeRun/DVR/NAS and Sling for everything else and honestly they work great on both the Cube and AppleTV.

The Apple TV interface is so clean and quick, if they had passthrough I'd buy two more and replace all the amazon TV stuff I own.

For future proofing... they won't release another one for a while based on history
Nividia released Shield models in 2015, 2017, and 2019. This is four year old tech at this point, and by historical standards two years past due for an update.

I need a new one, badly. My 2017 still runs Kodi and Real Debrid (Remux rips too) perfectly fine. But it doesn't support DV. I got a TCL QM8 a couple months ago and I'd love it if Nvidia would finally give us an upgrade!

The 3rd gen Fire Cube has had me tempted, but I'd rather get a Shield, since I know it works, and works phenomenally

I bought one of these years ago and have never regretted it. Probably still the best streamer out there, and a genius remote.

They update the firmware/ software at least twice a year.
Hardware does not really need to be updated.

Whether the hardware NEEDS to be updated is a matter of opinion. But based on HISTORICAL trends, which is what I was addressing, they are in fact overdue. Historically they were on a two year update cycle, granted with a rather small data set.

I own one of these and can't believe that it lags more on 4k content than my fire stick 4k max. That said, they are seemingly updating it forever and it has support for so many files, Plex, a better app store and side loading without hoops. I really wish Nvidia would update the hardware, but overall I'm mildly satisfied, mostly with it's longevity, but wouldn't buy another one this many years later.

Have you actually tried playing the newest content, 4k, Dolby vision, etc. This thing lags. No it's not my wired Gig+ connection and other devices manage to run it for 1/5 the cost.

All the time, through Kodi streaming off my Synology. Just watched 65 last night in 4K with DV and it's like butter, never had any issues at all with the box lagging, etc. Best streaming device I've ever used, I even bought a spare that I travel with to hook up to hotel room TVs.

Except when the updates makes it worst. Just had to factory wipe mine and restart
Never had that happen. I have 2 of them. Rock solid.
They've been doing a damn fine job for me.
