Mixed reviews. Could be hard to read outdoors. Be interested to know what others here have to say

This is one of my favorite tools. I'm tempted to buy a couple as spares or gifts at this price. The laser works perfectly outdoors (not affected by sunlight) and the screen is as easy to read as anything else outdoors (i.e., not bad; if in very direct sunlight you may want to shadow with your other hand)

Not sure who to trust, lots of positives at Amazon but pretty terrible reviews at Bosch site:

I live and breathe by my Bosch lasers. Best investment in tools for the value and time savings they do.

The reviews at the Bosch site do paint a bad picture, but I really don't believe it's an accurate one. Realize that the vast majority of buyers that are very satisfied will never go to Bosch site (or Amazon) to say how happy they are, yet the vast majority of those that have a problem will do that, so it's not always an accurate determination factor.

I bought the GLM165-40 back in December on that Frontpage deal and it has worked flawlessly for me all along. The accuracy is truly +/- 1/16" as claimed and I did many tests to verify that.
I've seen several cases of 'user error' and ppl wrongly saying their unit measurements were 'off' by about 4 inches, but actually they were wrongly determining that by not realizing the unit uses the bottom surface of it to be the 'Point A' of the measurement.
They were (wrongly) using the top surface as their comparative manual measurement 'Point A' mark.

The only drawback is that in bright sunshine, there are occasions where you have to look at the screen from a different angle to see the readings clearly, as it's not a backlit screen. Or when measuring longer distances outside in bright sunlight, it may be hard to see the laser dot at that distance, tho both of these 'sunlight' issues are fewer than you'd think.

When you're neutral or positive about your reviews you post them where you think other people that will benefit will read them. When you're pissed off about your review, you generally want to tell the person that made the product. This may be an explanation for why reviews skew in this manner. It also may not if there's no way to know but generally that's my rule of thumb when I evaluate reviews in the aggregate. Here's another easy example try finding a towing company with five-star reviews on Google maps. Best of luck.

What do you commonly use these for?

I was thinking broad measurements for planning new flooring, etc. Would they be accurate enough for baseboard measurements, crown molding, window returns, etc?

I use for molding all day. Excellent for it. Its accurate to 1/32 or 1/16 at least id say. Literally replaces my measuring tape and is easier to use. for crown its a god tier tool. it can also do area calculations for tiles and has memory. pretty sweet.
