Chiaki software + Tailscale + ROG Ally/Legion Go/Steam Deck should get you all set up with playing PS5 on the go

The PS Portal doesn't really do anything except for offering a "portal" to your PS5. The capabilities of this ASUS ROG Ally are far beyond the portal.

Any beat up old tablet/smartphone can do what PS Portal does. 😂

Thx! I need 2rd controller, and also PS portal is less money. I am asking mysef, do I play pc game on-the-go?
Check out the cheaper Steam Deck model for $350 if remote play is your big thing. I have the Ally and do love it but the 256gb Steam Deck seems like a good deal for your use case and some pc play.

Can this fully perform what PS portal does?.
I have an ally & with some tinkering & the Chiaki app it can stream like the ps portal but I'm guessing quality of audio is better on portal along with image quality. So it can, but not as well… I have the Ally, & ordered ps portal too.also Ally doesn't have the same haptic trigger feedback. The portal does.

It's better than the portal bc you don't need a wifi connection to play games. Just buy them on Steam and take them wherever you go

You say the hardware for the Steam Deck is subpar compared to the Go, but also mention all of the problems that the Go has....
The Steam Deck OLED is weaker. SD has a 4 core Zen2 processor. The Ally/Go have an 8 core Zen4 processor. The SD has an 8 compute unit RDNA2 iGPU, while the Ally/Go have a 12 compute unit RDNA4 iGPU.

All while this Ally 512GB deal costs $50 less than the Steam OLED 512GB. Slickdeals is all about telling people about the best bang for your buck, not arguing about which console you like better. But if youre willing to go for the older Steamdeck LCD model, it becomes very good price to performance wise. That could be had for $400 for the 256GB model.

I was able to get an open box ROG Ally Z1 Extreme for $495 at my local Best buy. I was tempted to bite on a new one but it was a hard deal to pass up.

Doesn't this have overheating issues? Is there a known quick fix now?

After seeing all the problems with the Legion Go I'm glad I got the open box Ally deal couple weeks ago. Have had zero problems with it so far (SD works fine). New Deck OLED looks very cool, but still subpar hardware compared to Go/Ally. If you just wanna play emulators and Steam games I'm sure its great. But if you want a more versatile full windows device the Ally is your choice. Playing MW3 on it right now and runs great...not sure how it runs on the new Deck.
I have an Ally and the Legion Go and previously had a steam deck. The Ally is the best choice of the 3 especially if you value a stutter/judder free experience.
I was soooo disappointed in my legion go. I'll be returning it once I have some free time. I love the screen size, but the legion go software is trash compared to the Ally's and the lack of VRR just sucks so bad.

Steam deck is okay if you're comfortable with low frame rates. The refresh rate adjustment slider on the steam deck helps with eliminating judder by lowering the refresh rate to something that matches the fps to pure able to consistently hit in game.

Anyway long story short the Ally is the way to go lol

Great information from someone with experience on all three devices. Thanks!

That's all true and helpful but one thing that hasn't been mentioned in the thread is the Steam Deck OLED screen should be the best of the bunch.

Double max brightness, HDR support, OLED vs IPS, fantastic color gamut. IIRC some of the previews said it's straight up one of the best screens they've seen. Ally does have some advantages there with the higher refresh rate and the higher resolution but those both take much more power to drive and will drain the battery faster so there are trade-offs.

Not trying to say the Deck OLED is the way to go, but there is more to consider than just the raw power. A better screen is like a visual upgrade for everything you use the device for so it's a notable point of comparison.

There are a few others to consider around the same price range, I would look in to the others to see which one best fits you needs (Lenovo Legion Go, Valve Steamdeck and this one). I personally really enjoy the Steamdeck and was thinking about this ROG Ally but they just released the OLED Steamdeck which fits what I was looking for in a handheld PC.
I bought the legion go and so far so good

no love for Ally Z1 (non-extreme) ? this one also is on sale for $449.

General consensus is the savings is not worth the performance downgrade. Even with the lower spec processor the battery life is the same as the Z1 extreme.
