All while this Ally 512GB deal costs $50 less than the Steam OLED 512GB. Slickdeals is all about telling people about the best bang for your buck, not arguing about which console you like better. But if youre willing to go for the older Steamdeck LCD model, it becomes very good price to performance wise. That could be had for $400 for the 256GB model.
Sure, the Deck struggles with the newest games, but I'm very happy with its performance on games like Cyberpunk and Elden Ring.

Also, I know it's subjective but Ally does not feel comfortable to hold for extended period due to it sharper edges. If you're looking for a more refined device in both hardware and software definitely go with SD. I've used both Ally and SD, felt like Valve spent 100x more into R&D where as Ally felt like something quickly slapped together.
I'm just saying, at least try both in the hand before you decide to spend the money and be careful with the SD card issue.

I saw someone on comments page 1 say they haven't had an issue yet, and I wonder if durability is better with microSD cards designed for hot car dashboard cameras (like Samsung Evo Endurance series).
However, I think there are a lot of factors that affect this. Are you running games that require high TDP (power drain) that cause the handheld to produce more heat, or lighter games? As I just mentioned, are some microSD cards more durable, and what % of customers experience failures anyway?
Ultimately, I think the problem stems from the ROG Ally's heat exhaust being right next to the MicroSD slot. Asus may be able to reduce card failure with firmware updates that throttle performance to keep max temperatures down, but I don't think Asus can really "solve" this until they do a fairly extensive redesign to move the storage slot away from the cooling system, and maybe improve the cooling system altogether.
I think I would wait till a Gen2 device from Asus if I wanted to take full advantage of its processor power… meanwhile, it probably ends up working better and more sustainably when you only load it down as much as you would a Steam Deck anyway. Meanwhile, the Steam Deck support and ecosystem has matured impressively, for portability the battery life and ergonomics are substantially better (especially the OLED, but the custom silicon on all the Decks are more efficient), and for this generation Valve just has a leading advantage for portability (and a ROG Ally/Legion GO have some cool unique ideas, but for high Hz and graphics you're better off with a mini-PC right now).
