The Steam Deck OLED is weaker. SD has a 4 core Zen2 processor. The Ally/Go have an 8 core Zen4 processor. The SD has an 8 compute unit RDNA2 iGPU, while the Ally/Go have a 12 compute unit RDNA4 iGPU.

All while this Ally 512GB deal costs $50 less than the Steam OLED 512GB. Slickdeals is all about telling people about the best bang for your buck, not arguing about which console you like better. But if youre willing to go for the older Steamdeck LCD model, it becomes very good price to performance wise. That could be had for $400 for the 256GB model.
No. The 512GB model of the Deck OLED is $50 cheaper than this. Also gets better battery life and outperforms the Z1E at 11W and below. The Ally and Legion Go have their uses at higher power consumption but for maximum battery life in a handheld, the Deck is the best choice at the moment, short of switching to an ARM handheld like the Odin 2 or something.

You beat me to it. Sure, the Ally has a higher performance ceiling, but that comes with a pretty big battery life tradeoff. Whereas the Deck really does shine at lower TDP.

Sure, the Deck struggles with the newest games, but I'm very happy with its performance on games like Cyberpunk and Elden Ring.

So with this, can you play madden and things like that? Also how much do you pay? You pay to buy madden or pay a monthly fee? I'm someone that played snes, game boy, ps1 so not familiar with these things.

Just a minor correction: the 512GB Steam Deck OLED costs $550, so it's $50 less than this deal, not the other way around. The 1TB SD OLED costs $650.

But will they support linux, probably not.
I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. Will "who" support linux? All of the launchers that I discussed are running on my steamdeck, which is not running windows... I am basically stating that you can play NON-STEAM games on the Steamdeck, which is a fact as I do it on a daily, without the use of windows.

Buying this device is like buying a PC. It runs on Windows 11. So any game you can play on a PC you can play on this (which is virtually anything beyond Nintendo games & some Playstation games). Most people nowadays use an account from a free service like Steam (where you keep all your owned digital games). You'd just buy the game you want on Steam & own it digitally. Some games take subscriptions or have in game purchases. But games like Madden you'll just pay upfront and own it (most games are $60 or $70 on release but tend to go down in price a lot over time or they have deep sales - especially in Summer).

For those of us who use gamepass ultimate, the steamdeck is a paperweight.
Not necessarily, you can dual boot and install windows on the steamdeck if you want. Or you can use the gamepass streaming on the streamdeck.

Has ASUS resolved all the issues with device killing the SD cards? I returned mine after it killed my 1TB.

Also, I know it's subjective but Ally does not feel comfortable to hold for extended period due to it sharper edges. If you're looking for a more refined device in both hardware and software definitely go with SD. I've used both Ally and SD, felt like Valve spent 100x more into R&D where as Ally felt like something quickly slapped together.

I'm just saying, at least try both in the hand before you decide to spend the money and be careful with the SD card issue.

I came to ask the same question about the microSD slot…

I saw someone on comments page 1 say they haven't had an issue yet, and I wonder if durability is better with microSD cards designed for hot car dashboard cameras (like Samsung Evo Endurance series).

However, I think there are a lot of factors that affect this. Are you running games that require high TDP (power drain) that cause the handheld to produce more heat, or lighter games? As I just mentioned, are some microSD cards more durable, and what % of customers experience failures anyway?

Ultimately, I think the problem stems from the ROG Ally's heat exhaust being right next to the MicroSD slot. Asus may be able to reduce card failure with firmware updates that throttle performance to keep max temperatures down, but I don't think Asus can really "solve" this until they do a fairly extensive redesign to move the storage slot away from the cooling system, and maybe improve the cooling system altogether.

I think I would wait till a Gen2 device from Asus if I wanted to take full advantage of its processor power… meanwhile, it probably ends up working better and more sustainably when you only load it down as much as you would a Steam Deck anyway. Meanwhile, the Steam Deck support and ecosystem has matured impressively, for portability the battery life and ergonomics are substantially better (especially the OLED, but the custom silicon on all the Decks are more efficient), and for this generation Valve just has a leading advantage for portability (and a ROG Ally/Legion GO have some cool unique ideas, but for high Hz and graphics you're better off with a mini-PC right now).

Maybe it's just me, but even in a short period of time with the rog ally I found it fairly uncomfortable to hold.

Suggest to keep an eye out for open box between now and Jan 14. And especially after Jan 14. There will be returns!

I think most people don't want to have to install a second OS on their device. Also, streaming still is not very good.
