In case you are looking at this as a solution for streaming games from your desktop to another room, please be aware that GeForce Experience and Nvidia no longer support GameStream.

Sunshine and Moonlight are the server-client pair of apps you will want to use to do any LAN game streaming. They are relatively easy to set up, but it's something you should know about before purchasing if you intend to use this as a game streaming device.

Moonlight: https://github.com/moonlight-stream/moonlight-qt
GameStream sunset announcement: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/a...tification

As for performance, I have not had any issues at all with this model of Shield. I used it to replace the smart features on a 2016 Samsung TV that was getting progressively more annoying and losing support for applications like Twitch.
Isn't this like 6 years old?
I was a diehard Shield user. I switched to the Apple 4k. Did obsessive side by sides. In my experience, the apple has better color and picture quailty. Nothing is perfect as the sound quailty on the shield is better than apples 4k. I only stream no gaming.

Still works great, not surprised it's still priced high. Would get another one but ran out of rooms.

Wow. That's completely wrong. The Shield Pro, essentially alone amongst the inexpensive HDMI add-ons, can be both a player and a Plex server. PlexPass isn't even required for hw transcoding.

This confused me more. While streaming is 90% or viewing, i have blu ray rips on my nas ds920. I NEVER watch Blu Ray via a player connected to TV. I use Samsung 990 sound bar, GCTV, and it's NOT sluggish. Is the only advantage lossless audio with shield? I don't have plex pass because don't need multiple device features nor android app on phone/tablets.

I'm with a lot of other people on this, it used to be one of the best devices out there and it's still really good, but it's starting to suffer. Is this a good price? Sure, when comparing it to itself, but when compared to other things out there? not so much anymore, as the gap between the shield and other devices has shrunk a lot, and in some cases, it sounds like apple has surpassed them on a few fronts.

I mostly use it as my plex server, but it's having issues there, although I think a lot of that has to do with Plex, not the shield. I can try to watch content straight from plex on the shield and it has issues, but watch the same content via plex on a computer and no issues. So as a plex server it still seems to be fine, but as a plex player, not so much.
Spend 100 more a get a nas, scrub the shield. What's wrong with this logic?

I've got 4K Blu-ray rips stored as folders on a 4 bay external USB hard drive enclosure. Can I use the Shield Pro to transcode those folders to 1080p and play back those movies to another device via WiFi?

I have 2 of these and I love them. I'm in the market for a third but I can't bring myself to pay almost $200 for a device that was put out in 2019. Don't get me wrong, it's great , but apple at least updates Apple TV about every year or so and it'll suit the needs for 98% of users out there. Unfortunately, I'm on the Nvidia Shield needs an update train before I buy another one.

The sad thing is they're the only ones to make a real premium android box. Maybe if the rest stopped catering to the lowest common denominator, there'd be more competition at this end, and they might have a reason to update their devices.

Also a reason why I play in Apple's camp for a change with my one projector using an atv4k. The rest I'm still on Android.

Nope. Just the vocal ones who still think this is the best, but it's only for their beyond niche use case and that's it. Heck, I could just throw local content on my channels DVR server and use their app. No need for a separate flex one, if I were to go that route.

I've been using it with Sunshine/Moonlight over the past few months without any issues. I stream 1440p from my desktop to a 4K TV, and use the Shield to upscale the Moonlight stream to 4K. Both devices are hardwired to the router with gigabit Ethernet, and any added latency is imperceptible, even for fast paced FPS games like COD.

My TV only supports 4K@60Hz, so cannot comment on support for higher refresh rates. If you plan to use upscaling, the Shield's maximum supported framerate is 60Hz.
Thanks this is the info I needed. I do wired gigabit as well and go back and forth between using it with the glitchy old steam link or plugging in with a 4k 120hz hdmi cable from a PC in the other room with a long cabled USB hub as well. This sounds like a better in between option, not quite the performance of direct wired, but more reliable than my old steamlink. Tough call

Some of you noobs dont understand the concept of nvidia shield pro. The device does not do transcoding. The transcoding needs to be done on a nas or equivalent. Shield is to replace your useless samsung sony tv garbage software since they lag for most of the time. and i agree that it is still the best on the market
This is literally inaccurate lmao.

The shield has the plex app and you can set it to server or client.

If you don't have PlexPass, and you only have the base DS920, not the DS920+, then you do not have an Intel CPU with QuickSync, you have an ARM cpu, and so the only path is DirectPlay. As long as your client devices can directly play the media formats you are sharing from the Plex that's on the DS920, there's no need to transcode.

You will need transcoding when:
  1. Gramps needs to use Plex from his remote TV in Podunk Nowhere with lousy Internet connection rates
  2. You want to stream on a phone with a lousy cellular connection
  3. Gramps upgrades his internet but can't figure out how to set up his Plex client correctly
  4. Gramps runs Plex, has great internet, sets up his client correctly, but his client is a 2012 TV with dinosaur Plex app on it, barely able to even playback
  5. Etc….

Oh, or subtitles are required for odd media formats. Or your playback device doesn't like the source media files, for whatever reason. Or if it's a day ending in -y and Plex just says "Hey, we need to transcode!". Very helpful to have PlexPass + Intel QSV on those days.

There are plenty of solutions for "I want to stream something locally", but not much for "I want to stream something to my phone, to gramps in podunk nowhere, and to random nontechnical friends with lousy playback hardware" - Plex solves for all of those situations.
