In case you are looking at this as a solution for streaming games from your desktop to another room, please be aware that GeForce Experience and Nvidia no longer support GameStream.

Sunshine and Moonlight are the server-client pair of apps you will want to use to do any LAN game streaming. They are relatively easy to set up, but it's something you should know about before purchasing if you intend to use this as a game streaming device.

Moonlight: https://github.com/moonlight-stream/moonlight-qt

As for performance, I have not had any issues at all with this model of Shield. I used it to replace the smart features on a 2016 Samsung TV that was getting progressively more annoying and losing support for applications like Twitch.
Isn't this like 6 years old?
I was a diehard Shield user. I switched to the Apple 4k. Did obsessive side by sides. In my experience, the apple has better color and picture quailty. Nothing is perfect as the sound quailty on the shield is better than apples 4k. I only stream no gaming.

I have the nvidia shield tv 2017 version. The last one that was with the gaming controller. Don't use it often, but it worked great with emulators, roms especially n64 games. Not lag at all. Did notice after not being used awhile the rubber buttons on remotes get sticky.
That controller was awful! The menu button was very close to the direction pad and often gets triggers while using it

I had one of these, not impressed at all for the money. Should b e 99.99 by now. I would much rather pay $50 or less for an xbox series s. Who is buying this old tech thing for almost 200 dollars, like it's a deal or something.

I use to be a die hard fan of the Shield and have owned the 2015, 2017, and 2019 versions over the years.

It used to be the best streaming device out. But over time, the OS experience got worse and worse and the hardware sat stagnant while the competition got better and better.

My wife still uses the Shield because she prefers the triangle shaped remote. But I've grown to hate the Shield and moved onto using the 4K Apple TV for myself.

It definitely sounds like user error (if you're issues are on Plex primarily). This is universally considered one of the best and most compatible Plex clients out there. I've tested multiple different clients from PS5, Xbox Series X to Rokus, Google TV, Apple TV, only the NVIDIA Shield Pro has been able to handle everything that I've thrown at it including 4K HDR Dolby Vision content which is key for me. Sounds like somehow your video is getting transcoded and your Plex server is unable to keep up with the transcoding. The NVIDIA Shield should be able to directly play almost all content from my experience.

Unless you're using the NVIDIA Shield Pro as the Plex server itself, then that's a different story. I run my Plex server off of my Synology NAS and use my NVIDIA Shield Pro as a TV client only connected to my LG 77" C1.
I wish it was user error. It's not. Direct play of 4K rips from a QNAP NAS as the Plex server over 1Gb wired LAN. No transcoding. Whether I have the match framerate option in Plex enabled or not, audio will not stay in sync. Shield is plugged into the game HDMI port with any processing disabled on a Denon X3700H.

As for streaming apps, if the Shield is set to 60Hz, I get a ton of video stutter with audio in sync. If the Shield is set to 24/30Hz, video plays perfectly but audio will not stay in sync. Refresh rate switching apps result in smooth video but out of sync audio. Whether I have dolby audio processing enabled or not doesn't make a difference.

Kodi/Kodinerds plays 4K DV rips absolutely perfectly* (*MEL only, Shield won't do FEL) At this point, that's the only thing I use the Shield for.

The sad thing is they're the only ones to make a real premium android box. Maybe if the rest stopped catering to the lowest common denominator, there'd be more competition at this end, and they might have a reason to update their devices.

Also a reason why I play in Apple's camp for a change with my one projector using an atv4k. The rest I'm still on Android.
What about a Formuler? I've been hearing good things about those....

I have the 2019 Shield and the upconvert, audio and picture on my Sony 98 Inch are unbelievable. Apple TV meh tried it and it doesn't match up. Audio especially sounds so much better with Shield

this model is at least 3-4 years old .Still the best on market.. The Processor is fast. toggle out one app streaming something into a new app streaming .go back to a previous app running in background streaming and it plays the movie/show instant. That's example how fast processor .
-I also love it for tivimate app multi screen option.. You need a a fast processor and good video card to stream 4-10 different channels at same time..
I tried to do this with the new fire stick 4k plus with 6e... It could not stream over 3 channels in tivimate same time

The CPU on this thing is approaching 8.5 years old (yes GPU was upgraded, but not by much), $170 just seems steep.

literally the only reason i hold on to my 2017 shield is because it can run a Plex server. If i knew of any other machine in a similar form factor and as versatile as this shield, i would switch in a heartbeat but i am not aware of anything else currently on the market short of me building some sff pc box

I'm sure it's still a top notch Android TV device. But at this point, if you're looking to buy a premium streaming device, I'd think Apple TV must've surpassed it by now.

I wonder how long Update 9.1 (Android 11) will continue to hold on... A10 ended 8 months ago; do we have 4 more months of A11 support?

https://endoflife.date/android

I like Apple's support update plans (basically, going on 7-8 years for most of their hardware, that's forever in computer years...)
