In case you are looking at this as a solution for streaming games from your desktop to another room, please be aware that GeForce Experience and Nvidia no longer support GameStream.

Sunshine and Moonlight are the server-client pair of apps you will want to use to do any LAN game streaming. They are relatively easy to set up, but it's something you should know about before purchasing if you intend to use this as a game streaming device.

Moonlight: https://github.com/moonlight-stream/moonlight-qt

As for performance, I have not had any issues at all with this model of Shield. I used it to replace the smart features on a 2016 Samsung TV that was getting progressively more annoying and losing support for applications like Twitch.
Isn't this like 6 years old?
I was a diehard Shield user. I switched to the Apple 4k. Did obsessive side by sides. In my experience, the apple has better color and picture quailty. Nothing is perfect as the sound quailty on the shield is better than apples 4k. I only stream no gaming.

For a more versatile multi-purpose alternative at around the same price, get yourself something like a Beelink S12 mini-pc with the new intel N100 CPU (16GB RAM + 512GB SSD) for around $150 (lots of sales usually) and an air-mouse for around $20-$30. This setup gets you:

- AV1 decode
-install Plex, Jellyfin, Kodi, whatever media server on it
-bookmark all your streaming services in a browser
-run adblocks in the browser(s) or install Pi-Hole in a Docker container

Basically everything the Shield does and then some.

Disclaimer: I have multiple Shields, multiple mini-PCs running as streaming clients, a couple of hefty HTPCs running as media servers, all served by multiple NAS' - the mini-pc option is VERY viable as a streaming box.

Is this good for playing kids games like Roblox? Comes with controller?
No. This uses a really bad OS that isn't supported by a lot of apps.

Does anyone know the status of the Plex client issue that was introduced with a shield android update many months ago? It screwed up Plex users. Some were able to get working with some hot fixes that came while others had to manually roll back to prior os version. I haven't dared to update mine again since manually rolling back as it has been my (great) Plex client for my media room.

Anyone else have had any issues with buffering when subtitles are enabled on good quality videos and know of a solution ?

I realize now, that it is very taxing on software to add subtitles to the video.

All image-based subs are crap imo. Go online and just download a text-based version and use those instead. Barring that, you can use something like Subtitle Edit to OCR and convert those image-based subs to text-based.

I'm sure it's still a top notch Android TV device. But at this point, if you're looking to buy a premium streaming device, I'd think Apple TV must've surpassed it by now.
Meh, I have a 2015 shield and a 2017 shield tv. They have both been great. I have no want to buy this old expensive device now though. I don't know much about apple stuff as I left their ecosystem a few years back. I don't like their walled garden. Does the apple tv even allow USB media playback? I use Kodi quite a bit, and I love emulation. My shield tv vudu app doesn't support 3d which was a bummer. That probably affects me and maybe 10 other people. Whenever I think of apple I just think "expensive and proprietary." Nvidia has been great in supporting the shield from 2015 up to now, but I do wish we could get a meaningful hardware update. I haven't experienced the 2019 shield AI upscaling, but my preferred device is the 2015 model that has an on off capacitive button on the front, and micro SD expansion in addition to the USB inputs. I currently have a 512gb card, but a 1tb micro SD card is only $50 currently.

If you're getting this because you're diehard Android or customization, then go for it. Unfortunately, if you're just getting something to stream the best one is now newest Apple TV

My 2019 Nvidia shield took a Truehd 7.1 Atmos dump on my apple TV 4k via my synology Nas plex server. I agree the shield is old but I would still take it over my apple TV 4k any day. With the shield you can basically do whatever you want. With the apple.... Well you can only do what your master Tim cook says you can do.

Almost the perfect device. But desperately needs a tech refresh. This is highway robbery for them to still be charging so much for this outdated streamer.

- No YouTube HDR
- No modern AndroidTV support for system level refresh rate matching
- Broken Dolby Vision 7/8 support, color reproduction issues ( red push )

I purchased the Nvidia Shield TV a few months ago and was disappointed, I returned it. I mainly bought it for 4K upscaling as I read that Nvidia is the best in the market for 4K upscaling, but the Shield TV picture quality was less than my Fire Stick. Does the Pro make a big difference in terms of 4K upscaling? That's the only reason I might invest in this buy.
Ditto. I was very disappointed with it. Buggy as something very buggy. It was bought to supplant firesticks as recording live tv wasn't working well. It failed miserably.

I love that s12 pro. I've used it as a plex server. Works great for transcoding too. Has a 4 k stream transcode and it can probably do a couple more.
What do you use to operate it ? Wireless keyboard/mouse?

Anything can; that's trivial. The question is can the device on the other end play it back without transcoding.
My Chromecast 4k can't playback a file share stream of that. My Samsung note 20 ultra can't either. What options do I have?

How would a mini-pc/htpc do with upscaling content compared to a new apple TV device? Any AI upscaling for sdr/1080p content with a custom setup?

Thanks
