The correlation of sound quality and cost is not linear. It's kinda like the law of diminishing returns - at some point, the increase in cost is probably not worth the minimal improvements gained. Everyone's "sweet spot" of bang for the buck will vary. Is stepping up from a
~$400 V6A to a $800 A4A going to give you twice as good sound improvement? Probably not. Doubling the price will most likely not double the sound improvement. The improvement can be somewhat subjective. To some, over the number of listening hours they use their receiver, the $500 premium may very well be justified.
I expected people to say the yamaha model is a more premium model and it is.....but that's why I added the price difference. I don't doubt the yamaha is better built, more premium, more reliable, etc. But once you plug them into the same 7 speakers I'd argue the yamaha doesn't sound $500 better.

Well when you consider many on this site have the junk posted like the cheap Jamo, Triangle, Polk and so forth... You might as well finish it off by buying the cheap electronics to go with it.
Now if those same 7 speakers are quality and will do well with a little more power, a little more peak oomph that soundtracks have, I'd argue the opposite.
I'll take it one step further. For a 5. 1 setup, I'll take my pre-hdmi Yamaha RXV2500 via optical over the onkyo any day. There's also a reason I still use my Pio SC75 in my theater room. Don't need 4k, and even if I did, for now I'd just run a splitter for the 4k Blu-ray and Ts4k. Not worth upgrading to an equivalent modern receiver when I don't have plans for atmos or more than two sources and don't game. I'll take more quality power any day that'll handle the more demanding scenes with ease.
Different sounds, the pioneer is darker, softer, less detail but more mellow. Yamaha is all about the detail, brighter, More picky with the speakers you pair with. One isn't really better than the other just the personal preference on which type of sound you like
Been running RX-1070 in 7.1 setup using Klipsch speakers since 2017. Only inconvenience is Xbox hooked up to LG B3 directly with ARC. Upgrading to this will address the inconvenience with 4K/120. That said, I do not think it is worth the price tag because it is essentially the same receiver all else equal?

Great description. I'd also add that it's about pairing your speakers with the right sounding receiver.
The Pioneer matches really well with my B&W, but performed horribly with the Martin Logan's I ultimately returned.
I have the A4A driving my B&W in wall speakers and it's good, but doesn't sound quite right. I just ordered the 505 for the other room (big ole /older B&W bookshelf units), may move it to the family room depending on the sound though.

Correct, not worth it. I am in the same situation with a LG B2 and RX-A770.
Old school cerwin Vega 15's front and cerwin Vega center and surrounds. No sub 5.0 setup. Powered with a denon rx-a770. Would more power be needed am I missing something it seems my setup gets crazy explosive but dialog isn't as crisp….. and no this isn't a frat house lol, just a 48 year olds basement.

Have you run the mic setup? The Yamaha receivers have parametric eqs that can be dialed in with a mic or manually. You may just need to bump up some of the midrange bands on the on screen display.
I'm 52. I've had receivers since high school and AV ones since Pro Logic came about. Eight is nothing. I have 5 or 6 at the house now with three in current use. And that doesn't include power and integrated amps.

Fair point. Sound quality is definitely subjective, especially at these levels.

low end Onkyo vs mid range Yamaha
Yamaha does charge a premium but these receiver models aren't competing.

Seems minor except for Multi-room HDMI Output
