I'd take it a step further and recommend getting a generator interlock on your main panel and a power inlet box on the outside of your house. This way, you can safely run the generator outdoors and only need 1 cord to connect to your house from the outside instead of running extension cords to the inside. Bonus is your entire panel will also be powered, so all your lights, outlets etc will all work. Only exception is any high loads like central a/c may need to be turned off but furnace can work.
If power outages are relatively common, and you absolutely need power when it's out (E.g. maybe you have sumps to run, or medical equipment), then you're probably better off in the long run making a more "official" solution than running extension cords.
The best the homeowner can do would be an interlock kit like you mention (makes it more legit than just a breaker and common sense) and make a shed for the generator. Run wire to it oversized for a larger generator in the future. Yes this method will cost a bit more time and $$ upfront, but looks a lot better, will be quieter, and overall easier to just walk up to and start up. If your generator supports it you can also wire in remote start.
To check if your generator comes with a bonded neutral, you can test connectivity between the N and G in any of the 120V outlets (if you have a tester), just leave the unit off.
Where should the N and G not be bonded? If you're supplying a panel that already has N and G bonded elsewhere, unless you have a ground rod at the generator which is going to be super uncommon.

This is not a closed frame unit, and you should not expect quiet operation , nor should you buy it for that, but as far as open frame units go, its on the lower side as far as sound.
