Switches are so cheap, not sure why this is a concern.
I use a 5 port gigabit unmanaged switch

We've had these for 3 years and very happy with them. They also have the built in AV.

I recently purchased the x55 3 pack. They had them on refurb through amazon for $139.99. If im in the room with the router im getting 945mbs on wifi just through the base. If i move out to the kitchen it drops to around 150mbs. When i add a second node (no backhaul) my kitchen speed increases to ~550-675mbs. I also tried linking the 3rd to a detached garage roughly 150ft away (no backhaul). It connects at a blazing 37mbs haha.
Ive only had the system deployed for 2 weeks, setup was a breeze, good wifi speeds, intuitive software but some features locked behind paywall. I prefer ASUS+merlin software when it comes to routers but figured id give these a whirl.

I'd grab one if it were to have atleast one 2.5gb port, since my current netgear wifi 6 has 1gb port and it's not that impressive. (I currently have 1gbps plan and Arris modem that supports upto 2.5gbps).
Edit: In my use case I don't think it'll make much difference to speed unless I get device with 2.5gb port.

WYM DDWRT is EOL?

I learned recently that the OnHub's can be flashed to DDWRT with some work. Quite a few steps but might be worth the trouble.

Ddwrt had not supported any new routers in the past couple of years. There's no router with AX with ddwrt support.

I can see that. Back when AC came out they ran into issues with Broadcom licensing their drivers

I currently only have a traditional router and did not know whether switches can be used with mesh devices, if they would go between my modem and mesh device, whether there are any disadvantages to using a switch, or what specs to look for. None of these things would be issues for me if these TP Link devices had 3 ports instead of only 2.

I'll take the high road here.

The switch goes downstream of your router (mesh device). Nothing goes between your modem and router.

Whatever lan port on the router you plug into the switch and you gain the remaining ports for lan connectivity.

Look for gigabit for the best price point and likely your needs. Some prefer metal. Tp-link has solid options for $14-20 depending on whether you want 5 port or 8 port. You can spend more and gain more ports and features. If you want wall mount some have that feature. If you don't know what a managed switch is, you dont need it, stick with unmanaged. I wouldn't buy anything from Tenda despite likely the cheapest. Disadvantages are requiring an additional power outlet, aesthetic.

kgorilla is correct. For your need, you want to connect the router to any port on the switch. There are no known disadvantages that matters, it will just act like extra ports on your router.

Maybe I got a dud but mine drops and has to restart itself several times per week. It's particularly irritating when it doesn't just affect that wifi node, but my PC hardwired in to the second ethernet port.

I thought so too but it is completely different model and very comparable to X60/X55/X50 models.

This unit is worse than I thought, it's been 2weeks since the purchase and it worked fine until yesterday but now the speeds dropped to 10-20mbps from 800mbps. I tried troubleshooting but nothing works. The setup process and the app interface is good though, I might try a different version but W6000 is definitely a bad pick.

It's TP Link, so these are probably EOL already in terms of support.

Not sure why you're getting down voted. I have this model and they already aren't updating firmware. Its only getting security patches. Definitely going to get something that supports open-wrt next time.

Looks like no VPN client features on this one.
