These have user-upgradable memory, so if you don't mind doing it yourself it's quite cheap to upgrade. See page 42:

Cons of this model:

No USB-C port (for the millionth time; it's Dell's fault though for making it look confusing).

HDMI max output is 1080p (no 4k output).

Reports of hinge issues.

What's good and bad about this machine, just looking for a computer in this price range to do basic tasks
Just about everything about this laptop is "bad", but it's more than enough for a casual user laptop, and the price is okay.

- Single channel memory.
- Pretty much the smallest SSD size possible in 2024.
- Lowest acceptable screen brightness.
- Lowest acceptable screen color quality.

Keyboard isn't backlit- but whatever it's only $320 you can't have everything.
CPU is aight.
Battery life is probably aight.
Weight is aight (for the specs it could probably be lighter).

Refresh rate of the screen is actually really good- which is confusing given how low quality the rest of it is.

i3 version with 512GB SSD is $40 cheaper. Worth the downgrade in CPU?

What are you doing with it? Just doing regular computer stuff like Word, web, watching videos and stuff? More than good enough still.

I bought one of these a couple months ago. It's a great laptop after I spent $30 for another stick of RAM. Super easy to add a stick yourself. I use it on our coffee table for quick web browsing.

I would say no. The i5 is like bare minimum for speed when web browsing. Stick with the i5 and upgrade the storage and RAM. This laptop has a blank slot inside for a 2.5 SSD you can add super easily.

I was able to pick up a refurbished Latitude 5310 2 in 1 Touch from this deal for $250 total:

Did I do okay? What do you think of that model/specs?

Upgrading from 8GB to 16GB RAM is $250 more. That's insane!
Admittedly, it looks like the RAM upgrade also swaps graphics from UHD to Iris XE. Might make some difference depending on use case.

All those other things can be overlooked, but the hinge falling apart after a short time is unacceptable. This is e waste despite how good the rest of it is

The only weakness of that model is the cpu (this inspiron will be quite a bit faster) - but otherwise it looks like a decent deal (it has a touchscreen with a better display, usb-c, overall better build).
