UserBenchmark is an instant red flag. They are incredibly biased towards Intel and therefor make sure that AMD CPUs score less than Intel. Use a site like NanoReview or something else to view actual benchmarks. Here's a link: https://nanoreview.net/en/cpu-com...en-5-3600x
I remember about two years ago when 5950's were going for $1000 and retailers were selling out. It's crazy how much they've come down in price. Seems like a steal for a 16C/32T ryzen.
My current cpu and I love it but I'm upgrading next zen iteration. Should be a substantial jump for anyone running a zen 1/2 or 8/9th gen Intel. I'll only advise upgrading to this though if you already have an am4 system and could use the 16 cores. If not go zen 4 or wait for zen 5.

Isn't this kind of a funky pairing, given the target audience of the 5950X? I'd expect it to be paired with a nice X570 board. Not that B550 is bad, but it's definitely more of a value-minded chipset which is a bit of an odd match for a prosumer/entry workstation CPU.

I'm currently running a 5950X with an ASUS ProArt X570 Creator motherboard and have few complaints. Don't agree that liquid cooling is a must, though; a capable air cooler is sufficient. My tower is built with a Noctua NH-D15S which along with a high airflow case like the Fractal Meshify 2 Compact can handle benchmarking more intense than the vast majority of real-world workloads.

Need powerful MB with good VRM, it's mostly X570 but not all even X570 have it.

your cooler cost even more than my EVGA CLC 280 AIO (got for $60).
Good AIO cost the same or even cheaper than good air cooler but more efficient.
I just don't understand why people buy expensive air coolers, it's overpriced.
And such monsters take A LOT of space inside PC case, it's inconvenient.

Even at release date Nov 5, 2020 - $799.
When I got it Apr 2022 at Microcenter - $519 before coupon.

You clearly weren't paying attention if you think you could've gotten any CPU in 2021 at msrp. Do you not remember the pandemic chip shortage? Nothing was in stock. This exact CPU was going for over $1000 on eBay in 2021.

Edit: Brought some screens just for you. Trust me, I tried getting it for msrp. Even made a gif at the time [imgur.com] from AMD's website. The limited stock AMD released every so often would sell out in seconds.

I generally go with air coolers primarily because I don't have to ever think about them aside from changing thermal paste every ~5 years, since they don't have liquid to sublimate through hoses or for gunk to grow in or pumps to wear out. You also don't see air coolers recalled even a fourth as frequently as you do AIOs. Space taken in case isn't a concern of mine personally as my cases are generally ATX midtowers or larger and I'm not swapping out components frequently enough for it to pose problems.

That's not to say I'm staunchly against AIOs, but if I were to buy one it'd probably be for an SFF build and it'd probably be an Arctic Liquid Freezer for their value, performance, reliability, and manufacturer's track record with warranty which stands out among AIOs.

Same boat here. I am perfectly happy with 5950x but projected performance gains for 9000 series with 3D VCache look insane.

70xx have them. For older gen, you AMD CPU that ends with a G for iGPU.

Despite being AMD's last gen flagship, its pretty outdated now. I wouldnt even consider this a good deal, especially with the mediocre motherboard.

For example the 13600k is faster in gaming and single thread, and barely slower in multithread and costs under $300. 14700k is even faster in gaming and single thread and is +40% faster in multithread for under $400, albeit you'd still need to spend like $130 on a motherboard.

You are right, I upgraded CPU in Apr 2022 so didn't care about CPU prices in crazy covid time.

Dude, quality AIO same as air cooler, nothing happen for years, usually people just sell old model on eBay and buy quality new model if you don't want to open and self-service it.
But recommendation for re-paste every 1/2 or 1 year for regular grease.
You can get new Arctic now:

1. 7950x almost the same 5950x just 7nm->5nm and factory overclocked. Faster 20% and take 50% more power. I can simply overclock my 5950x and get the same result. New model not always mean if everything inside also new. Corps like your money you like "trendy new model".
2. Dude, 5950x are NOT FOR GAMING and never was. It's for non-expensive powerful WORKstation. If it's not for you - doesn't mean it's bad.

Again, faster 20% and take 50% more power plus more expensive MB's and memory - is it worth it? Not sure.

today at 11: 3.5 year old computer part, that was replaced by several new models, sells for a lot less than when it came out.

other shocking news: war in the middle east and there is salt in the ocean

AM4 folks, for gaming, just grab the 5800X3D and call it a day. It's the top gaming CPU on the now obsolete platform. The 5950X will do much better, given twice the cores, on distributed compute workloads, so it would be more for folks doing productivity work on it.

I have this CPU, if you plan to only use it for gaming turn SMT off in BIOS and run AMD ryzen master AutoOC to get proper negative curve on voltage. My game performance was smooth ever since.

Quote from SeriesXM :
Is there anything like a "picking pc parts for dummies" for people like myself who have been somewhat living under a rock? I was never a big pc gamer, but I used to build computers a couple decades ago and knew what I was doing back then. I'm pretty sure the fundamentals are all the same, but I don't know what components are the best (other than storage) and I'm not really sure where to learn. There are some games I'd like to check out and my laptop is just too weak, so I've been thinking about throwing something together.

I have an older full size tower that I haven't turned on in over a decade. Could I gut that and use it with today's motherboards?

Was in the same boat
Started reading reddit.com/r/buildapc and buildapcsales and reviewed comments for trends and recommendations

Then I'd compare some of those recommendations to tomshardware and other benchmarks to formulate a list of possible parts I was interested in

And then buy piecemeal when sales arise

Exactly what I have. Upgraded my GPU, so my CPU.and motherboard are my next potential bottlenecks at the moment... curious
