Newegg 12700K+Asrock Z690 Riptide DDR4+16GB DDR4 3200

add each to cart comes out to $309.97 so cheaper than microcenter

This is an amazing deal... but it's pretty niche, which is probably why the price is so good.
Most people on LGA 1700 already have Alder Lake, so it's probably a pretty rare scenario where it makes sense to go from some lower end alder lake CPU to a 12700k but *not* Raptor Lake or Raptor Lake Refresh, which are at least somewhat faster. It's also tough to justify a brand new LGA 1700 build when AM5 exists and we're not that far away from Intels new platform.

Still, no doubt that this is an absolute shitload of performance for $175 bucks.

You mention adding a Z690 instead of the headset, but when I look up Z690, I get a ton of options for different brand motherboards, all different price points. I know very little about this stuff, but I'm working off a processor that doesn't allow Win11 and I am getting to where games won't play well on my comp. Which motherboard exactly are you referring to?

good value if you just want a gaming pc at the cheap without much regards to upgrading (cost to move onto a better cpu performamce wise to performance ratio is fairly negligable), and LGA 1700 is ddr4 compliant so you can virtually trade away upgradability for low price now.

the AMD alternative would be similar to getting a 5800x3d/5700x3d and a cheap AM4 mobo, by sacrificing upgradibility for price/performance.

basically if youre interested in this, youre more interested in price/perf and not upgradability.

I have AM4 AMD Motherboard and Ryzen 5, can I just buy this CPU and Z690 motherboard and do a simple switch upgrade?

it makes more sense to buy a 5700x3d or 5800x3d if youre on AM4 and want a budget upgrade, rather than buy a cheaper 12700k and a new mobo.

Hi! Total noob here- are any of these motherboards small enough for a living room pc case?

You're better off just buying a case that is made to accommodate your motherboard. If your pc is a average proprietary computer, the parts in it are most likely assembled to only be compatible with that case and will not accept aftermarket parts. Just use a pc building website to pick and choose parts to build or just buy a prebuilt unit.

I keep asking myself this question too. Intel is moving away from LGA1700 later this year and my hunch is the next gen products will be quite an improvement considering the relative stagnation the past 4 years.

I'm looking for either an extremely good deal on CPU/mobo/RAM combo, or hold out for for the new product line.
