Even just the SD Card slot furnace issue would be enough to warrant one.
That said - this is easily my #2 pick behind the Steam Deck OLED. Excellent hardware - but highly compromised by the SD card failures and (relatively) small battery.
Steam Deck OLED is certainly the better handheld (in my opinion) - as it does more of the "handheld" things better than the windows devices I own. (Standby/resume - auto-updating games - no drivers/funny business - excellent controls/hardware - great battery life - "verified" games in the store)

These manufacturers treat them as gaming consoles instead of gaming PCs, meaning that they want to set a performance target for a generation of devices, which is longer than laptop's one year cycle. Just like Valve debunked the possibility of Steam Deck 2 any time soon, I doubt ASUS or Lenovo will release anything for marginally better performance. They are going to release a next gen device if the device brings something new.

I have gotten open box previously for other hardware and they were new.

The SD Card reader issue is a pretty huge flaw that needs addressing - and it would appear that it'd require they do a lot of hardware changes to accommodate moving it.
The ROG Ally was the first of these Z1 devices out of the gate - and I would not be surprised if they'd give it a slight refresh to address the issues they overlooked.

Very very tempting as this has been on the wishlist for a while. My Retroid 4pro isn't even in same league as this and I have a blast with it.
